Fantastic drive with many sharp turns. Many small water flows/falls during the journey. Hard to stop as there is no to limited side way to park. Also, if you don't keep looking you might miss it. Dangar Falls is worth it. Walk down to have a closer look. We took the loop road. After Watching dangar Falls we took the Eastern dorigo way and it's gravel road(unsealed). The drive is awesome but goes through heavy bush area. We ended up having flat tyre due to gravel. Had to wait 4 hours in middle of bush for help as we did not have right tools to change tyres. My suggestion is if you don't have spare tyres or can't change the tyres don't take the gravel road. It became an adventures road trip but worth it.

We were on a mission of “chasing waterfalls”, our first stop was Gara Gorge and only 40 minutes away (driving distance) via Waterfall Way, we arrived at our next destination – Wollomombi Gorge. Wollomombi Gorge (World Heritage Area) contains two waterfalls – Wollomombi Falls of 220m and the nearby Chandler Falls. We had to see Wollomombi Falls as it is claimed to be the highest falls in Australia. Photos images are stunning but words can’t really describe the beauty when you’re visiting this place, it’s grand and breathtaking. Furthermore, entry is free with lots of free parking, picnic facilities and amenities. Ideal for young families who are struggling on a budget and would like to do and see something amazing with the children. The ‘Main Falls Lookout’ is the only walk that is wheelchair / stroller friendly access and only mere 300m distance. Wollomombi / Chandler Falls is a 2km walk all up (a bit of a slope upwards) to get there and many stairs to climb and you would need to retrace your steps back – it’s not a round trip (approximately 4km walk). Wollomombi Falls is best seen in its magnificent after heavy rain in the area… we did see the falls, not at its mighty potential but the surroundings and the fall looked impressive regardless. We’re not an active family but the walk was ‘easy to moderate’ at a steady pace and a reminder that we have just finished the walk at Gara Gorge 40 minutes prior to this visit. You definitely need to wear good walking shoes, a hat and a big bottle of water to drink. Well worth a visit and a beautiful place to have a picnic.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the homestead. Run by National Trust volunteers, our guide brought the story of the White family to life. The home is largely in original condition. Grand without being ostentatious. Check out the times of the guided visits on their website.

The exterior of this building belies the wonderful interior with its spacious galleries, great cafe and other facilities. Only Tim Storrier's magnificent sculpture - The Artist's Mount - hints at the treasures inside. The main attraction for many visitors would be the Howard Hinton collection of Australian paintings mainly from the early 20th century - we certainly enjoyed this enormously. But equally interesting were the other five current exhibitions. We were lucky enough to meet Lizzie Horne whose black and white sugar lift etchings capture the energy and essence of the region's wild rivers. The Clay on Country - ceramics of the central desert we also found mesmerising. Really, there's something for everyone. Highly recommended.

The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and informative and there was an abundance of information available on Armidale and also other regional areas. There are also books, souvenirs and local products for sale. Highly recommended.

We stayed two nights at the campground at Dangar Falls Gorge within the Oxley Wild Rivers national park.

It is a very pleasant campground: it appears fairly new or has been recently upgraded, There are 7 unpowered sites available, well spaced to give a degree of privacy with good fire pits and tables at most sites. Drop toilets are good and well maintained: some firewood off cuts are available. A most pleasant spot.

From the campground it is just a short walk to overview the gorge: truly spectacular scenery. There are other walking trails leading to other viewpoints as well as spots in adjacent areas. All very rewarding. lookouts appear to be newly constructed, modern, safe structures.

Take the ‘Tourist Drive 17’ on your way to Gara Gorge (also known as Blue Holes), as it is named the ‘Best of New England’, the route takes you along the picturesque Waterfall Way and through World Heritage-listed national parks. Gara Gorge is located at the end of Castledoyle Road – you will see clear signage where to turn off. Entry is free with lots of free parking, picnic facilities and amenities. Amazing place for hikers with scenic views along the very rugged Gara Gorge, accessed along ‘Threlfall Walking Track’ (5km – time suggested 1.5 hours) in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, overlooking an old power station, along old embankments and through ancient cuttings of granite. The walk to the lookout is a round trip and roughly the same distance either way. We’re not an active family but the walk was ‘easy to moderate’ at a steady pace and be mindful that the walk back is uphill – not user friendly for strollers or wheelchair access. Along our walk, we were fortunate enough to see lots of birdlife, a Wallaby and a Jacky Dragon. You definitely need to wear good walking shoes, a hat and a big bottle of water to drink. Well worth a visit and a beautiful place to have a picnic.

What a magnificent residence. Don’t miss it. Stained glass, grand staircase, glorious views from the verandas. Wow. It’s a shame management keep the upper floors for themselves, and lock visitors out of others that are ‘open’ to the public. That’s the aristocracy who feel they deserve more than the rest of us, who’s taxes paid for the restoration.

On our travels along the Waterfall Way from Armidale to Coffs Harbour, we took the short diversion to the township of Hillgrove. This is a "semi-abandoned" town with a history of gold and antimony mining. Whilst there appear to be a number of derelict buildings, many of the old buildings (homes and businesses) are no longer standing, but are marked by signs indicating what once stood there.

It is an interesting drive through the town, and with reference to the signs, one can imagine how busy this little town once was during its heyday. Apparently around 3500 lived here during the peak mining operations. Now, there are around 90 residents and it looks like there is still a gold/antimony mining operation at the end of the main road through town.

There is also a historical museum in the town, unfortunately this was not open on our visit. Just off the road into Hillgrove is also the town's cemetery, which offers a peaceful stroll amongst the trees.

A fascinating place offering a glimpse of another era.

We always try to check out the local churches when travelling regionally as they tend to be really beautiful with great architecture. This example in Armidale is really beautiful and it is a large Cathedral with mosaic floor tiles. A man who was outside the church when we were there have a detailed description and pointed out some of the architectural elements of the church.

On holidays from Brisbane we stumbled across this amazing Aboriginal Cultural Center and Keeping Place. The gallery was stunning with unique and inspiring works. The highlight was the indigenous lady who willingly shared so much of her precious cultural history and stories. We learnt so much, thank you😊

On a recent road trip through Armidale, we needed to stretch our legs, so decided to stop at the Arboretum for a stroll around.

On route 19, BUT, do not leave from Uralla. Go via Armidale as the road is much better & the travel time is far less than advised by the Tourist Info office in Uralla.
Excellent facilities, take bangers as many clean BBQ's available. Well signed & good tracks. Still some falls today despite lack of rainfall, well worth a visit to this amazing canyon in the middle of nowhere.

Like most markets, Covid-19 has had an impact here. The market was small, but I still enjoyed walking around with my son. The fruit and veg for sale looked great. The grounds mean it is very easy to find somewhere to sit with your market lunch. I had momos.

An excellent meal was enjoyed here as part of a modified Vintage Rail Journeys train tour using former 'Southern Aurora' cars that travelled to Uralla.

The service from the staff at the winery was excellent and the range of items offered for lunch (varying meats including delicious duck) was terrific.

Importantly, they were able to quickly serve 90 people as we only had about an hour and a half here.

The grounds are impressive as is the beautiful guesthouse.
