Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Ruben L59 contributionsI walked along the Bay and the view is truly awesome. The water is also incredibly teal blue and pedestrian way is really wide and quite spacious. Definitely worth checking out when you’re in the area anyway. I was there at the onset of spring so I didn’t actually take a swim but even walking along the shore was worth it.Written 7 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - onitadaWellington, New Zealand277 contributionsWell, yes a beach in winter, still holds the thrill of a swim if you want! Without the mass summer holiday crowds the beach is quite peaceful, so much so that the birds appear in numbers. There a lot of Fantails darting around, Shags bobbing up and down, catching fish near the beach and a Kingfisher, no less!
There are plenty of car parks available, the toilets are clean, and of the old late last century type, I guess.
The Scorcho Rama Cafe is still open for business if you fancy food or a coffee. If you want you can take a walk-up Fortification Road Steps, once achieved, offering vistas. If you arrive at the right time of the year and hour of the day, you can watch the cruise ships pass by, although the ever-present Cook Strait ferries are always evident.Written 9 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We wanted to get rental bikes and the main place to do so is the Bikeshed over in Pencarrow, about 3.5 kms away. You can take a bus from Day's Bay, but it is also possible to get cruiser bikes from the Boatshed near the Day's Bay Wharf. We did this, and had the option to swap them for mountain bikes once we reached the Bikeshed (same company). However, the cruiser bikes were comfortable and worked fine, so we just kept the same bikes and rode them all the way out to the Pencarrow Lighthouse and back. Then had lunch at the Chocolate Days Cafe and took the ferry back.Written 4 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LadyDiva XUnited Kingdom12 contributionsI loved this place & am lucky to have friends who live nearby. I went for walks on this beach nearly every day I was there, & visited the cafe a few times if it was open. Lovely place, clear water, beautiful views, friendly fishermen, dog walkers, surfers & a lovely little cafe.Written 21 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jobst56Hamburg, Germany1,670 contributionsAs I'm not a beach person , I rather walked along the promenade.
Even though it was windy and not too warm, there were still a few hard-boiled guys in the water.Written 6 December 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 529grahamrAuckland, New Zealand70 contributionsA splendid walk with views across the harbour. Some amazing homes to view perched high on the bush clad slopes and quaint houses on the shore line. Very characterful and picturesque. There is a small jetty and several sandy beaches and some rock pools to explore at low tides. A footpath winds around the shore just above the tide level.Written 10 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MadshusCanberra, Australia1,359 contributionsI came out onto Houghton bay following my walk from Wellington CBD. It's a breezy spot with red rocks in the foreground. You can walk easily along the pedestrian footpath adjacent to the esplanade towards Island Bay. There are interesting houses to look at along the way too. Also a snorkelling spot.Written 5 December 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- D PWellington, New Zealand8,079 contributionsKeep it quiet as we love this beach. Nice walks right around the headlands. Perfect place to go frolicking in the rockpool at low tide. Lots to see and do here. Snorkel, picnic or sit and read a book.Written 22 January 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 422ianaDunedin, New Zealand3,610 contributionsWalked down from the monument above the bay. There is good access to the water for boats with a ramp. There are no dogs allowed due the blue penguins nesting in the area. So if your lucky you may spot some.Written 24 November 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
