Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I might have missed the 800 year old Rimu tree by taking a wrong turn and ending up in the Kaori Cemetary staring at a tribute monument to the ships cat, Mrs. Chippy, from Shackletons Antarctic Exhibition, where I knocked back a sip of Old Monk Rum in salute, only to learn that it is easier getting into a cemetery than leaving one, and yet, that is what I managed to do.

A trail took me back into the Otari Reserve where I found myself following a stream bed, along so many trestle bridges, and it was here that I encountered a two-meter-long fin eel, resting in a shoal, thus avoiding the current. I pondered its existence, and mine for that matter. I then came to my senses and continued on.

The path also took me back to the picnic area (with barbeque facilities and toilet), where I looped up over to the main building (with toilet), back down past the waterfall, right down to a trail that led me to the car park from where I ventured from on Churchill Drive, around the condemned trestle bridge.

Such is the nature of the Otari Reserve, that when you enter you may not know where you end up, or where you are going.

We walked through to the Butterfly creek picnic area via the Muratai track, and then back down to Eastbourne via the Kowhai street track. All in all this took us about 2 and 1/2 hours solid walking. It is very up and down and by the end of it my knees were protesting....younger walkers however, didn't seem troubled so it might just be an age thing!
There are some stunning views of the harbour as you get near the top and the bush tracks were well maintained. The Muratai track wasn't gravelled, but that wasn't any bother at all, in fact I preferred it as the gravel can be a bit slippery. All in all, it was a lovely walk and definitely worth doing.
Like another reviewer, I was surprised at the lack of birdlife though. A couple of tuis and one fantail. Given how beautiful the bush was, I did expect more. Take water and food - it would be good to plan a decent stop at the picnic area before heading back!

We spent the weekend up in the Horowhenua and decided to go back to Wellington via the Akatarawa Road between Waikanae and Upper Hutt. Although it is fully sealed large sections are basically one way and care is needed. It takes over an hour to travel the 40km. We did in it fine sunny weather. I would not recommend it at night, heavy rain or in the depths of winter. Nice views back over the coast.
