Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Weta Workshop was excellent. Bianca, our guide, was terrific. It was awesome to see all the great work Weta has done for different movies, not just The Lord of the Rings.
    Very enjoyable day.

There are copycats out there but this one is the original! Chewy the main contact person apart from the guide treats me like a royalty customer. He’s so very very nice to talk to over the phone and 100% responsive to every text I asked. I reckoned Chewy has a military training background so quick to act to his customers. Maybe he’s the mystery manager that Grant, our very knowledgeable and equally kind tour guide is reporting to. As for Grant, I’m very pleased with his initiative in making my Mom comfortable during our tour especially in the forest. The best thing I liked with Chewy is his sincere action to find my Mom’s lost phone during the tour. Good news! His kind efforts paid off and Mom’s phone was found and returned to us. Cool as Chewy! Thanks again!

Absolutely beautiful sanctuary and a quality walking tour. The museum is great as well and you should plan to devote 45-60 minutes to that alone.

Right from the start of the guided transfer by bus, you felt like you were getting a special peek behind the curtain at the magic that is Wētā Workshop.

Because we had some extra time, we stopped at the Roxy Theatre on the way which included seeing all the LoTR, Thunderbird and Oscar related exhibits, alongside the beauty of the art deco movie theatre.

The tour of WW was well organised and demonstrated so much of the history of the special effects, props, prosthetics etc… from LoTR and nearly 300 other movies, created by WW artists. Fascinating and so interesting.

    It did not disappoint!!

Truly a highlight of our trip! Two guides and the two of us walking Zealandia for 2.5 hours. What a tremendous undertaking Zealandia is, and what a success it seems to be. Starting at dusk, we first got to witness the birds, many of which were endangered, coming back to the preserve to roost. Nico led the way, accompanied by Ruth, and identified species by appearance, flight patterns and call. At dark the adventure truly started. Aided by infrared lighting Nico showed us birds, lizards, insects and, best of all, 5(!) separate kiwi sightings! We can’t recommend this highly enough and the private tour added to the experience.

Lots of fun exploring the Cuba street neighborhood. Had good tastes from coffee and sweets to beer in the sunshine with kombucha, fish & dumplings in between. Very enjoyable time spent with Jon.

Victoria was a really friendly tour guide and was very knowledgeable of the food we tasted , it’s origins and how it related to Wellington’s history. The food and eating places were really nice and varied in type.

We did the intro guided tour with AJ (excellent and very energetic!). This one hour tour provides a great into into the overall museum and history of NZD. After the tour we spent a good two hours exploring it for ourselves, with a heavy focus on the volcanos and natural history sections.

Plenty of children's activities as well.

Wow! We absolutely loved this tour. Oliver led us and Amanda and Sharon went ahead of us to spot the animals. We were fortunate to be able to see the spotted kiwi, tuatara, and pateke and we were surprised to see glow worms. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a nice gift shop. They even served us tea made from the leaves of a pepper-like plant after the tour. They are passionate about their mission and do an excellent job of explaining the natural history of NZ and their 500 year vision for the future. Well worth a visit.

We did a morning tour with Louis. He’s great. Simple as that. He loves Wellington and it shows. We talked about history local and national, politics, culture, Māori traditions, biodiversity, you name it. Walked through some amazing neighbourhoods and the botanic gardens. Great recommendations too. Louis is a gem of a guide.

Just wow, I came here with low expectations, since modern art museums are just gaudy and oversaturated by slop under the guise of contemporary art, and I'm genuinely impressed. There is so much information here, and it really reckons back to the age of European NZ, when bold men fought overseas for their country and Britain.

It's really amazing to see how all the giant sculptures are locally created, being produced by the Weta Workshop which is just out of Wellington and equally as incredible. By the end of my ventures into this museum, after hearing the amazing sound effects added, seeing confronting and realistic imagery, alongside reading memoirs and quotes, often said by the soldiers themselves, I was almost in tears. I remember being at the part depicting a boat filled with nurses and wounded soldiers, surrounded by neon lights and poppies, and I thought to myself, "What was the point of this war?" and "Was all this for nothing?" And that's when the emotions hit.

What really cemented the experience was when I threw a poppy at the feet of a statue, and bowed my head in somber respect to the men who fought and would likely be ashamed of how their descendants are being treated today.

In fact, the experience would have been perfect if it the creators of the exhibition didn't feel the need to try and downplay the accomplishments of the soldiers, by constantly inserting Maori culture and soldiers, both of which while existing, played a minimal part in the war, which was mainly fought by European descended Kiwis. Overall, it felt as though this exhibit, and the entire museum as a whole, just couldn't fully acknowledge the sacrifice and benefits of Kiwis without having to artificially insert some mentioning of Maoris into the equation. While it wasn't a big thing, and didn't detract majorly from the Gallipoli exhibit, there were some ridiculous sections, such as at the end where a sign tried to impose Maori culture onto me, by compelling me to wash my hands at a provided 'Maori approved tap' because in their culture it's 'tradition' to wash your hands after interacting with the dead. While there were more egregious things, like an informational tablet branding Captain Cook as a traitor and saying that Maoris are changing Captain Cook's achievements to fit their narrative, that did not occur in the Gallipoli exhibit itself, so I'll be acknowledging that in a separate review of the exhibit holistically.

We had a great day. Visited all the places, talked about the filming, and about so many other things. The feast was excellent and the weta workshop tour was a great ending.

This tour was awesome.. Stella took us around some great Cocktail bars and we tried some new and some favourite cocktails. Really laid back and enjoyable time. Problem was after Dinner, when we knew where the cocktail bars were on the way home.. and how good the cocktails were!! Took me a day to recover!! 🤣

Highly recommend Spaceship. Lots of non-linear puzzles, so if you get stuck you can work on something different to reset your thinking. 'Agent Jack' was fantastic. He was very good at giving hints that spurred our thinking rather than giving the puzzle away.
