Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There is absolutely nothing at street level to let you know that Hawthorn Lounge is one storey up above your head. But here you are, so open the door. Inside you are faced with steep, dirty stairs. Up. On the landing, more of the steep dirty stairs to the left, and something that looks a bit cleaner and brighter ahead. Ignore clean and bright. Go left. Nearly there. Pause. Read the house rules notice - it gives you a sense of how you are expected to behave in this establishment. Inside is a long bar with a wall of bottles and two rather debonair-looking chaps making drinks, stuffed sofas, a few tables, low lighting, soft jazz. It’s a cocktail bar. Or champagne. There is a small menu of their house specialty cocktails, but you could undoubtedly get anything you wanted. We chose one of the house specials. $25. LOTS of alcohol topped with warm cream and probably whisked egg white, which made it a bit fluffy. The charming waitress repeatedly filled our water glasses so we didn’t get plastered. Open until 3am. I am told (not by them) that when the place is full, they close the street level door to save folk the slog up the stairs only to find there are no seats available. Delighted to find Wellington has such a place. A treat.

The most wonderful setting in Wellington and fortunately for us we were treated to a live music performance.
The setting is wonderful, the drinks superb and normally the staff are great.
However the bloke on reception last night was nasty, tried to make us pay for drinks that another group didn’t pay for and became quite obnoxious and physically imposing. Not very pleasant

Friendly staff, very welcoming and bubbly. Great atmosphere. Free bottle of wine for it being my birthday also so that was a bonus! Mechanical bull provided good entertainment too!

We popped into Golding’s yesterday afternoon for a drink and enjoyed a fine Hawkes Bay Syrah or two.

You have to know it there, or just stumble across it by luck - it’s not quite a ‘secret entrance’ but almost.

The delightfully bizarre interior, whilst quite small, will keep you entertained for you entire visit. I won’t say more, experience it for yourself!

Great bar with a huge rage of flavoured spirits. Had the lemongrass and ginger gin and the pink watermelon gin. really tasty although I would probably preferr d with a good quality mixer (where is Fever Tree in NZ except for a he bar next door!)

Friendly atmosphere with quirky decor. Cocktails were delicious and different. Staff was friendly and helpful. A lovely place to enjoy a night cap or start an evening off.

Ivy is the only bar I go to as I feel safe and can watch awesome performers, staff are lovely and they always have a smile (even after a long shift) and I never feel out of place at Ivy. Thank you all and I'll be there this weekend

One of the best places in NZ to try different beers. Several local ones on draft plus many more imported on bottle. Staff is very knowledgeable and prices are ok.

This place is amazing. Great Pinball machines from the past and some of the best recent machines. Lot’s of fun for beginners or those of us who played pinball in our youth. I wish I lived a bit closer !

We had a fantastic work do at The Lanes. Great customer service from Reuben via email when organising our event, through to making a mean Mojito for me on the night. All the staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was good and arrived on time and we bowled, played pool and the owner showed a colleague how to play shuffleboard. FUN!

Being Welsh, I couldn't avoid the experience. I enjoyed my first visit a few years ago, but this time it was very crowded and very noisy. Still has to be a compulsory visit if you're Wesh.

Absolutely amazing, closest thing NZ has to a night out in Berlin. Great lighting, awesome DJ’s and cheap drinks, what more could you want!?!

Basement bar on Allen Street which is dark and moody but a cool place for an event or a few drinks with friends.
