Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- westy54Sydney, Australia13,485 contributionsWe have walked past the front entrance to this club on Davey Street on numerous occasions during our visits to Hobart and seen the "Visitors Welcome" sign and thought that we should visit one day and have a look.
On this wet, windy and cold Friday we finally investigated and are so pleased that we did as we were lucky enough to see a match in progress.
The first thing that struck us was the design of the indoor court which was built in 1875. The court, which appeared to be wider and longer than a normal lawn tennis court, was enclosed by high walls on all four sides, three of which had sloping roofs beneath which there were viewing areas covered by rope netting behind which spectators could sit and watch proceedings. One of the walls partly protruded into the court but only for a short distance of the courts overall length. The floor appeared to be made of timber and had various lines marked across it. Shots had to be played over a net which divided the court into two ends (similar to lawn tennis) but could be played off the walls (as in squash). The balls in use were heavier than those used for lawn tennis and less bouncy whilst the racquets were made of wood. The rules appeared to be very complicated.
The very informative staff member advised us that Real Tennis is the original racquet sport from which lawn tennis is derived. It appears that Real Tennis was being played in England and Europe in the 16th century and even earlier but is now only played in four countries being Australia, the UK, the USA and France.
The Hobart Club was founded in 1875 and is now one of the oldest sporting clubs in the Southern Hemisphere. The only other operating Real Tennis courts in Australia are located in Melbourne and Ballarat.
Well worth a visit, particularly if a match is in progress.Written 22 June 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Three turfs with good signage. Enjoyed a tea while watching the game and great kiosk opens with a surprising amount of options. Free parking though when busy can flow out to the streets. There is an indoor area to purchase bar drinks and food too. Hobart is lucky to have such a great venue.Written 4 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

Good place to swim.Written 15 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
