Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- sallyBrisbane, Australia2 contributionsWhat a wonderful place to visit this ghost tour was the best I have done my guide Stacey and Michelle was the best.
If you have time in Tassie and are looking for something to do I fully recommended the ghost tour.
Perfect amount of history with the stories from people who was there and got executed there
These two had us all on the edge the full tour.
With leaving us wanting to know more we went back for the day tour. I fully recommended the ghost tour first.Written 24 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can do a self-guided tour but you would miss the stories so vividly told by a guide.Written 21 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - joans30 contributionsGreat to see the artists in some instances. Some very good pieces/shops/galleries.
But go on a Saturday and do the Salamanca market too, and as a combo a great experience. My time suggestion is enough for both. Added on time for snack lunch too.Written 6 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The collection is set out over two flors and accessible by lift or stairs. There is so much history and interesting displays about Tasmania's nautical past.
I particularly liked the original Commanding Officers cabin from the HMAS Derwent. The ship has been scuttled but the CO wanted the cabin saved. So cool to see everything exactly as it was back in the day.
There is a nice gift shop and a great book collection for sale.

Felicity was our guide and she was very passionate about the history of early Hobart and gave a very Indepth commentary on what life was for everyone concerned in Hobart at the time. The house we toured has been wonderfully retained in original form and it was a great way to spend a couple of hours learning about our history as a nation.Written 25 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AndrewHobart, Australia60 contributionsWow...what a great little museum. Very interesting and my little grandson was enthralled with the exhibits. Highly recommend going on a day when the steam train is running. It's been a long time since passenger trains have run in Tasmania so it's a novelty to ride on one.Written 2 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Peter VGreater Hobart, Australia264 contributionsWonderful spot to pop into either during the week or especially on a Sunday when the doors to the hall are open for an exhibition.
Originally built by Lady Jane Franklin in 1842 to bring some culture and civility to the area. The name Acanthe stands for 'blooming valley' and she had it erected as a classic temple form.
You can drive there as there is parking spots (out the front, next to the public toilets or anywhere along the street) or you can catch a bus as there is a bus stop at the entrance. The public toilets have been built only recently so are quite new and clean. There are a couple of seating benches on the land around the hall and the walking track leads all the way to the top of Lenah Valley road which is good for exercise and walking your dog. The public space around the hall also makes a nice little spot to have a picnic.
The hall itself is rather small but makes up for it with charm and ambience.Written 10 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AllanRosemaryBallarat, Australia396 contributionsWe've visited Handmark Galleries on Salamanca each time we've been in Hobart over the last few years, and it never disappoints.
They always have interesting paintings or prints or sculpture or jewellery & craftwork on show. Well worth browsing if you're done along Salamanca and have a liking for interesting pieces of art & craft & design.Written 21 January 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were particularly impressed with the beautiful range of paintings and photographs of birds and wilderness and nature settings.
There was also a wide range of other goods for sale with similar themes including jewellery, stationery, books, guides, homewares, soaps, some clothing items and other produce such as teas and olive oils etc.
Prices though, appeared to be geared to the tourist market.Written 23 June 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The door was closed and there was a sign to go to the garden to see the clerk.
The clerk was taking care of the garden. He immediately brought us inside this home and showed us everything we could see.
This house was built in 1926. The Makrees were quite interested in the design of their rooms.
It was interesting to see how they used to live here. This house was for opulent people. They had a family and they enjoyed their place.Written 13 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
