Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Albert Street Uniting Church is built of red brick with trimmings in white Oamaru limestone, and has a slate roof. It is an example of a Victorian Gothic Revival church. What makes this church so interesting is the landscape.

The architecture of old and new contrasting against the skyline is something to behold. The foreground with the church holds it's own charm...but the skyline around it has awe-inspiring new builds.

The church was built for a cost of ÂŁ10,000 by contractor Thomas Pearson & Sons from 1888 to 1889. And the design was by G H M Addison, who won a competition. It is now heritage listed.

I was out and about visiting different churches in Brisbane leaving St. John's I noticed the steeple of this church off in the distance so figured I would walk there. I crossed the park and hiked up a rather steep hill to the church but sadly it was closed as it was a weekday so I just looked around the outside. Very nice grounds and outside of the church is pretty. Bet it's nice on the inside as well.

I thought that Cathedral Square was associated with St John's Cathedral until my guide in the Cathedral gave me a background summary. It was earmarked to be the site of the largest cathedral built in over 300 years with the laying of the foundation in 1928, the Holy Name Cathedral of the Catholic church able to accommodate 4,000 worshippers. Sadly for the church at the time, the Great Depression of 1928 intervened and the value of the church's investments collapsed. WW11 then followed and although hope sprung eternal, construction of the building never eventuated and the site was sold in 1982. The only section built, the crypt, was used for worship for a period after 1935. The crypt was demolished in 1985 to allow construction of the apartment block. I understand that the section of retaining wall and balustrading on Ann Street is part of the original works and is heritage listed.
Its a rather small square, tastefully set out, with vegetation, shade structures and seating.

Something different, a simple Russian church, not in great condition but worth a walk past on your way to the gabba.

We walked past this church on a number of occasions and it always seemed closed and with no activity in the grounds. The building dates to 1878 with the laying of the foundation stone but when the walls reached a height of 1.8m construction ceased, the grand design of the architect proved beyond the means of the parish. Work restarted in 1882 and the chancel, transepts and first bay of the nave were completed in 1883 and the church dedicated. There were further additions but the building was not completed until 1932 but minus the tower and spire of the original design. Its still an imposing structure with the high pitched roof and a number of impressive stone ornamented windows. Heritage listed in 1992.

Although I had worked in the construction industry, I was not familiar with the term 'Brisbane tuff'. Did some research and discovered that tuff is a type of rock made of volcanic ash and lithified into a solid rock. Greater than 75% ash is considered tuff and less than 75% is tuffaceous and can be either igneous or sedimentary. Brisbane tuff can be pink, green, blue, grey and purple depending on the extent of oxidation of iron and manganese.

This beautiful piece of history is one of Brisbane's most beautiful cathedrals around, the stained glass windows, architecture and lovely wood work inside are amazing, such a peaceful environment right in the middle of the busy Valley. I have some gorgeous photos, but it seems there is no option to load them at this time.

The building dates to 1884 and replaced the church in Grey Street which had served the community since 1851. Park church served the Presbyterian community until 1950 when a new church was constructed and opened in 1952.
The building is an impressive structure in the Gothic Revival style, rectangular in shape with a steep pitched roof. The walls are constructed of red/brown colour brick with rendered base, windows, door and trims. There is a lancet window flanking the main entry which has a large rose window over the porch. Side windows are triple lancet. Since the Presbyterians departed, the building has had varied uses and is now occupied by the ISEE Church. Viewed the exterior only.

The Romanesque style church dates to 1929 with the laying of the foundation stone but did not open until 1936. The church stands on a corner block surrounded by highly trafficable roads. Exterior walls are brick with terracotta tiles covering the roof.
Steps lead up to the front entry of arched brickwork and recessed door. As with most church buildings nowadays, closed other than during church services. Heritage listed since 2000.

We called in here on our way to lunch to have a look at what they'd done. It's a lovely old wooden church with original stained glass windows - that open up in true Qld style - a front porch, and it's been newly painted.
We spoke with a woman there from the church who said they're doing more and more weddings recently since it's been redecorated, and I can see why. The all-white interior would more than complement the all-white meringue wedding dress style.
