- AglassortwoMelbourne, Australia267 contributionsWe took in the free 10.30am guided tour on a Friday. There is also a booklet provided for a self-guided tour at other times. Through security you find yourself in a rather pleasant building that overlooks the bay. Built on the site of the Post Office that was bombed in WW2, there are memorial plaques and a display to acknowledge this part of Darwin's history. Our guide was full of facts and info and explained the features of how the NT parliament operates. The tour went for about an hour, and I could have done with somewhere to sit after about half an hour, so when we got to the chamber of the end, it was a relief to sit in the public gallery. A cafe is within the building if you want something to eat or drink. This is an old gaol and has lots of interesting information as you walk around - both information boards and audio on a phone with QR code access. The general area is also beautiful with a lagoon nearby to swim in. Yes its another war memorial but with a backdrop consisting of an awesome nature park plus the amazing turquoise water behind it, this memorial is in the perfect spot. There is a little bit of signage inside about the old theatre that was destroyed in Cyclone Tracy in 1974. - polly m4 contributionsIf you're interested in Darwin history, in alternative energy sources or in architecture, this is well worth a visit. It is a national Trust property, so well maintained. I was lucky to meet a guide who explained the history and the principles behind the design. No need to go out of your way to see, but if in the area, have a quick look. The information boards in the area create an interesting time line to follow. It is a pity that the vegetation has been allowed to grow in front of the viewing platform so the view is very patchy. I saw the signs as we were driving but was knocked back a little when we saw some Ămitation' planes on the runway. It took my mind into the situation Australia was in way back in WWII. There was another airplane strip a bit further north.
