Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Mark EWhitianga, New Zealand802 contributionsThis was our last stop on our West MacDonnell ranges day trip.
There is good parking.
Good footpath.
Lovely scenery.
If you are patient at the right time you will see the Rock Wallabies on the rock fall on the opposite side.
There was a lot of water in the gap this time, the most I've ever seen.
There must have been a lot of rain recently and 2 days after we left Alice Springs the road out to this area was closed due to flooding near Ellery Creek.Written 11 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Just a few steps up to the cenataph and viewing area.
Great views over Alice Springs out to The Gap and MacDonnell Ranges.
Well worth a drive up.

Their collaboration glass work is beautiful. - Mark EWhitianga, New Zealand802 contributionsStunning place, well worth the drive out from Alice Springs.
Great swimming spot.
I worked in Alice 45years ago and this was the weekend spot in summer for a swim and BBQ.

They were excellent! I am looking forward to visiting soon. Highly recommend potential tourists to contact the centre to take advantage of the 25% off accommodation, car rentals, activities, etc. they can offer during the summer months. It is much appreciated!Written 19 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Scott GWashington DC, DC448 contributionsThe outback scenery is ruggedly lovely. You can do some easy-to-moderate hiking. When we were there the cafe wasn't open, and we didn't see any rock wallabies (though we save "evidence" of them), however, a chance to explore the outback when you're in Alice Springs is, in my opinion, a must do.Written 10 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Victoria Beale3 contributionsJohnno took my sister & I on a trip of a lifetime to Palm Valley 4 wheel driving in a rear wheel drive vehicle! He was awesome sharing his knowledge & understanding of the stunning region. Friendly, funny, well read & entirely enjoyable during the whole day. What an adventure for 2 septuagenarians. Thank you Johnno for creating wonderful memories for us. NB Johnno was extremely thoughtful in providing details of what the trip included & times of arrival & departure from each stop.Written 25 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - realtravelprofAmsterdam, The Netherlands114 contributionsThe Ernest Giles Road was easy driving. We drove most parts of the road at a speed of approximately 80 km/h, slower at some sections and in curves. The road was in very good condition, a few sandy patches. The road surface was pretty even for an unpaved road. I have driven similar roads in a 2WD. I do not suggest you do this as conditions change with the season and the weather. Also car rental companies won't allow you to take a regular car on the Ernest Giles Road. We saw four cars on the Ernest Giles Road; we were not on our own, but it was not busy either. We stopped at the Henbury Meteorites Conservations Reserve for a picnic and walk.Written 12 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mark EWhitianga, New Zealand802 contributionsStopped in here for lunch on our way to Uluru and Yulara.
Had a good crack up, our friends asked if the did Cappuccino coffee and the reply was - we make black coffee, if you want it white, we put a bit of milk in it and it comes with attitude. If you want tea, it comes the same way.
I'd been waiting for that a long time travelling through the Outback. I was surprised how many roadhouses in the wapwaps had coffee machines.
Real Outback style roadhouse.

This area had approx 5mm of rain about 1.5 weeks ago
From Maryvale Rd - turn off to Chambers Pillar Rd for 43km
One road in/out
Collect firewood if you want a fire (some red gums dropped limbs in the rocky creek bed area giving you some good burning fuel) as closer to the pillar you can’t collect once through the gates
Loose rocks, sand and corrugations most of the way so air down the tyres
Saw the grader working on our way out so last section was superb
About 10km out from Chambers Pillar, very steep jump up (low range with diff locks on), deep ruts and very slow “walking” over the hill then descent - it was all about wheel placement and proper speed management
Approx 9km out - deep corrugations, sand driving - low gear - lowered air pressure more to cater for dunes
Flag on top of car if possible as it’s one car width at the top of the hills and you can’t see what is coming
About 6km out - sandy sometimes deep corrugations in places - slow going
2 gates to open and close - be aware of cattle on the road and some huge healthy looking camels
2nd gate is to the pillar campground area
Bush campground first - approx 2km to chambers pillar - individual fire pits, one long drop toilet and was very quiet
Pillar campground had individual fire pits and a long drop toilet, spaces were closer together than the bush campgroundWritten 18 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Good parking.
This was the first time I'd seen water in the gap.
We couldn't get to the Aboriginal art further in the gap.
The wild figs weren't ripe either.
No wallabies or kangaroos this time either.Written 11 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I loved hearing the stories behind each piece of work, & was lucky enough to be able to see artworks being created in the studio by some of the artists. It was a really amazing experience, & highlight of my trip to Alice!
I purchased a great piece & love it to bits!!

- rob27898Port Kennedy, Australia460 contributionsWasn’t sure what to expect as from the pictures it looked quite small. Although it dosnt take up a huge foot print physically there is tonnes of information and literature to read and see with plenty of fossils and drawings to match.
You can spend 5 mins watching the team behind the glass cleaning and discovering too.
A great hour or so spent mooching and reading. In November the place was super quiet with only the 2 of us in for most of our time.
Staff was friendly and helpful and don’t forget the usual tat-shop at the end.
