An unexpectedly large public park running alongside Sydney University. From busy Parramatta Road, it doesn’t look that big but it stretches back, covering 9 hectares.
It is conveniently across the road from the Broadway shops. Most tourists probably won’t find themselves down this part of the city but if you do, this is a nice spot to stretch their legs.
The highlight is a large natural lake with two teeny weeny islands and lots of birds and pond life. Peer closely into the water and you’ll see fish, turtles and long, fat eels.
Other attractive features include the historic entrance gates and original gardener’s lodge. Surprisingly, there is also a totem pole. It’s the real deal - a gift from Canada in 1964.
Paths wind their way through the park and are perfect for bikes and kids’ scooters. There is a large, well-maintained playground and wide open grassy expanses with shady retreats under the mature trees beside the lake.
There’s a swimming pool complex in the centre, with kids pool, a 50m pool, gym and cafe. Entry to the park itself is free but you pay for the pool, $7 adult/$20 family.
