Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Brolgas are showy birds so it’s a fun fountain.
The birds are performing their flamboyant mating dance, with their wings spread wide and their long necks swaying and curving upwards.
In nature, brolgas kick off their strangely elaborate courtship by picking up grass and tossing it into the air, then catching it again in their beaks. They follow this up by leaping into the air, sometimes up to a metre high, with their wings out at full stretch. There’s much head-bobbing, wing-beating, trumpeting, bowing and strutting that follows.
Rather sweetly, once they have secured a partner, they mate for life.
Designed by Terrance Plowright in 1998, the fountain captures much of the energy of the brolga mating dance.Written 5 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This Hyde Park water fountain .. is much smaller than the prominent & impressive Archibald Memorial FountainWritten 24 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Mairwen1United Kingdom11,188 contributionsA simple, understated fountain in Martin Place, “Passage” by local artist Anne Graham, consists of three separate water basins set into the pavement. They sit low to the ground, each with a single, small jet of water that spills over the edges of the bowls. Whilst they are fun for kids to run between, they seem a little out of proportion to the big, open space around them.
Apparently they are symbolic of the two Georgian cottages that once stood at this same spot but are long gone.
Polished, black, marble granite pavers sit around the bowls representing the cottage washrooms. More lines of pavers stretch back up towards Macquarie St. These lines echo the floor plans of the two houses - like a ghostly outline of the original cottages.
The fountain bowls themselves are based on Georgian style wash basins, taken from a 19th century illustrated catalogue of Victorian and Georgian ironmongery.
In those days of dodgy sanitation, washrooms were always placed at the back of the house so it is likely that the basins are sitting pretty much where the original washrooms would have been. The early colonists who lived here would have carried their water in from the Tank Stream, the only reliable water source.
All of this is a lovely idea but I’m not sure how you are meant to know it without looking it up.
There was no information about the cottages to help you understand all of this (at least none that I saw).
Overall, they are a nice addition to Martin Place but it’s a shame that most people will simply walk past without realising the significance of the work. I would have appreciated it so much more, had I known more about it at the time.Written 18 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Mairwen1United Kingdom11,188 contributionsThere are at least 4 fountains in Hyde Park, maybe more.
The Archibald Fountain is the large, showy one opposite the Cathedral. In contrast, the John Baptist Fountain is a small, humble fountain in a quiet, sunny corner of the park.
It’s easily overlooked. I've walked through Hyde Park many, many times without noticing it.
It's claim to fame is the fact that it's the oldest ornamental fountain in NSW. As such, it’s one of the oldest structures in Hyde Park.
What you see here is a low, circular pond-like basin with a central sandstone centrepiece made up of 3 large stylised fish. Their tails are raised in the air to form a pedestal that supports a clam-shell bowl at the very top.
The fierce-looking fish have open mouths and sharp, pointy teeth. They look a lot like the ornate fish on traditional, old Italian fountains.
Several jets in the bottom pool shoot water towards the centre.
Although the fountain doesn’t get a lot of attention from passers-by, it is hugely popular with the native white ibises who seem to love perching on the top or splashing in the water.Written 25 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
