This Kings Cross market is more ‘foodie’ than farmers. There are a few produce stalls but not enough to warrant calling it a framers market. Mostly it’s food stalls which suits me because we like to wander through on a Saturday morning, choose something from one of the stalls for a late breakfast, then find a seat over in the open grassy area.
In the past we’ve had the paella from the Sofrito Paella stall ($15) and the fritters at CornStars. Both stalls are still there and both were very good.
Today I chose a large chunk of Greek style spinach and feta pie from Birgitta ($10). The slice was so thick it took two hands to eat it and the ratio of spinach filling to pastry was very generous - delicious! Couldn’t resist a piece of passionfruit curd cheesecake for taking back home ($7.50).
The market costs mainly of regular stall holders so if you find something you like, you can pretty much rely on it being there next time you visit.
Apart from food, there is a small handful of other stalls, including jewellery, honey, pet goods, a couple of clothing stands, and flowers. The flower stall normally deals in roses, gerberas, orchids, and natives. Today there were chrysanthemums, and large bunches of beautiful ghostly grey eucalypt. The various pink shades of gerbera caught my eye so I bought 2 bunches for $15 (plus an extra $1 of you use a card - but who doesn’t these days?).
The market runs from around 8/9am - 2pm, every Saturday in the small Fitzroy Gardens park. You’ll find it just behind the famous El Alamein Fountain.
NOTE: there used to be a Sunday market here too (it has a TA listing under ‘Pott’s Point Sunday Market’) but this no longer operates.
