Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying

A huge variety of art is on show. A great location.
Heaps of parking.

Mostly enjoyed the current selection, although I found one heavily featured artist to be a bit woke ( I guess a sign of the times)Written 6 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dan LBunbury, Australia9,018 contributionsSome great and thought provoking exhibit throughout the CMAG galleries, great signage, yet even with the assistance of the signage, many of the contemporary art forms were beyond my understanding, I simply cannot envisage what the artist sees. I felt more at ease with the painting topics in the Sidney Nolan Gallery. In the RAM display plaster designs by Stuart Devlin and other artists were interesting as was the range of tools used in the changing design technologies.Written 19 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CultureCommandoCanberra, Australia92 contributionsIf I were given to such expressions, the Drill Hall Gallery could be described as 'a hidden gem'. But I'm not, so let's say DHG is a casual and intimate art gallery, operating under the aegis and within the ambit of the ANU. It's run by a small and dedicated team headed by Terence Maloon, formerly the Special Exhibitions curator of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. Fortunately for us he's here now. The exhibition schedule is lively and varies wildly. Last time I was here it was unremarkable, pretty awful really. But this time - wow! The ANU has just received a gift of 120 Western Desert paintings from a principal of the legal firm, Maliganis, Edwards, Johnson (yep, you've heard their ads on TV), and they are spectacular. A portion of them are hanging in the Drill Hall, and very well hung they are too -- to great advantage; the large-scale works especially make quite an impact. Really, this is the best exhibition I've been to for quite a while. But it's only on until 16th December. This is your chance to see (up close and personal, in a non-rarified atmosphere) major works by Queenie McKenzie, Yinarupa Gibson Nangala, Esther Giles Nampitjinpa, Kayi Kayi Nampitjinpa (Barbara Reid Napangarti), Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett), Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa, Linda Syddick Napaltjarri, Lorna Ward Napanangka, Dorothy Napangardi, Nyungawarra Ward Napurrula, Ningura Napurrula, Jorna Newberry, Mel Yamba Nungurrayi, Naata Nungurrayi, Nancy Ross Nungurrayi, Tiger Palpatja, Ray James Tjangala, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka, Wimmitji Tjapangati, George Tjungurrayi, and Yannima Pikarli Tommy Watson. As well, of course, there is always Sydney Nolan's Riverbend, on permanent exhibition in a dedicated room, which, when one thinks about post-colonialism (as I'm sure you often do) makes a nice juxtaposition with the current exhibition.Written 30 November 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phil JCanberra, Australia1,635 contributionsCan't believe that I haven't reviewed this previously, the name does indeed say it all 'contemporary art' some of canberra's best, most progressive, challenging artists, consistently exhibiting engaging, thought provoking work, much of it both personally rewarding and a sound investment opportunity.Written 12 August 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JLSMurrumbateman20 contributionsI've have now been invited to exhibit in this space twice now. A nice little space that provides the opportunity for Arts activities, including live music, in the Belconnen area. The location by the lake provides a great backdrop for outdoor sculptures on display. The friendly staff are always willing to answer all your questions about the space.Written 18 October 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phil JCanberra, Australia1,635 contributionsCraft ACT: Craft and Design Centre is a gift shop and exhibition space in the North Building above Canberra Museum and Gallery and directly across from the Legislative Assembly. It only has the one exhibition space but it is often occupied with works by some of Australia’s best contemporary designers and artists. Works are available for purchase and the gift shop is perfect if you want to buy something beautiful and unique, one off designer pieces that I have found always hit the mark and make excellent birthday/anniversary presents, they’ve not failed me yet! Craft ACT is a not-for-profit organisation that supports artists, ‘crafters’, designers and makers at every stage of their careers and so the exhibition space could be showing works by students or novices or it could have works by well established, highly accomplished, professionals. Call ahead and find out what’s showing or, if visiting CMAG below, pop upstairs and take pot luck. I’m yet to be disappointed.Written 21 January 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rick MWellington, New Zealand1,208 contributionsWe were really excited to visit here. We own about 10 Aboriginal art pieces, and it's always good to see the styles and cultural view of the world of another community. There's lots of art for sale at very reasonable prices. Recommended for a stop.Written 31 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
