Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- MomofAPNMatawan, NJ166 contributionsThis lake is one of the best kept secrets around! We went to Gmunden on a daytrip from Salzburg. First we hiked the Miestrail and swam in the lake, as there are many hidden 'beaches' along that trail. We ate wonderful food on the way back at the Grunberg Landgasthof, followed by a walk and coffee at the Gmunden Esplanade. Great views and really not crowded compared to places like Wolfgangssee or Hallstein. We also had Steckerlfisch at a small stand in Altmuenster, which was absolutely delicious.Written 3 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jaroslav NečasBrno, Czech Republic1,623 contributionsSmall castle old almost one century residing on the small island in the Traunsee lake. It looks like from the fairytale.Written 13 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Alon_ViIsrael1,499 contributionsThat was our first visit at Austria among all attractions we had during 7 days with the kids, and yet, one of the best we had.
You can go to mountain slides and the slide on top of the tower but the best attraction is just waling among trees on top of them and look at the beautiful forest or the town's view.

Accessible from Gmunden or from Gruenberg by short hike. It's worth to go there and enjoy the place.Written 28 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Natasha YBull Creek, Australia21 contributionsIncredibly satisfying all day hike. Went up via Mair Alm Steig and down via Hernler Steig. Probably better to go the opposite way around to make it a little gentler on the way down. Other more challenging routes exist but I didn’t have harness gear with me. Gloves are a must. I also ran low on water in August which is pretty silly for an Australian where we must carry a lot.
I got the last car park at 0830, not many spaces. Round trip hike took me 9hrs (60yo taking lots of rests and pics). 1250m up, then down. Approx 10km. Recommend 2.5L+ water per person.
Not for the faint hearted nor fitness challenged.Written 7 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The picturesque path took us along the lakeside for about 20 minutes before there was the option to go left under a tunnel or go right up some rocks, keeping the lake side to the right.
We opted for the tunnel route, which with hindsight was the easier route with a gradual climb up as opposed to a sharp ascent. Several tunnels were travelled before we began sharp descent towards Traunsee lake. The path had recently installed cables to help us go down. Upon reaching the shore there were a couple of beachy places to recover! Heading back now in the direction of Gmunden, the route was rocky but aided by strong wire cables to help. There was some clambering up rocks and ladders and some steep descents heading back to the junction where the tunnel option was taken earlier. The route took 2.5 hours at a liesurely pace by a group whose ages ran from 20-65 with no issue.
There are no shops, bins or kiosks on the renovated route so make sure you take everything needed with you.Written 20 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On the top of the hill there is a tree-top walk to be paid extra, but sensational for kids too. To walk down is long and tedious, one must be in good shape to do in in 2 hoursWritten 1 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
