Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Grifology70Melbourne, Australia402 contributionsWhat a fantastic garden. Lots of surprises and plenty to see. The creek trail is steep so not for all but it is pretty. Lots of sculptures to see. Easy to spend an hour here.Written 22 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- TravellerMelbourne, Australia17,552 contributionsMy wife and I visited this place on our way home after a holiday in Bendigo. There are information boards about the history of the Memorial Cross, which we enjoyed reading.
The original cross was burnt down by the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. The new cross was completed in 1995.
Apart from the Cross, there is also Major MItchell Lookout to see the panoramic views of Mount Macedon and a Historic Survey Cairn near the exit of the Reserve, along the driveway.
We also saw a Wombat that was happily feeding on grass.Written 19 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Sure it’s 20 mins if you don’t end up exploring like we did I spent ages here so beautiful. Bring water as the 20 min walk up is a steep and wear good shoesWritten 28 December 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - C...Gippsland, Australia95,039 contributionsFinding this is like finding Nemo... although I think you would have a better chance of finding a bright orange fish. Might as well introduce yourself to Dory along the way... because chances are you will get lost along the way.
You turn off the road and there is signage, but as the park is known as Sanatorium Lakes park then you might be in trouble... the signage is awful. I met a couple of ladies from Melbourne that had walked about 4 kilometres the wrong way before heading in the correct direction.
Finally I found it, but it was not straight forward. The fortunate part about being lost in this area is that it is stunningly beautiful... really stunning. Get out and go for a walk and the smell is heavenly.
But what is Sanatorium Lake all about? It was built in 1899 (same year as my Great Grandmother was born) to supply water to the tuberculosis sanatorium that was located several kilometres from the location.
So the walk is not a long one, but it's pretty... the lake is tiny, but then you would expect that when you know why it was put here. These days it's clear that the local wildlife are happy with something mankind made for them. The walk will not take you a long time, but watch your footing as it's nature at it's best.Written 8 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Many other antiques and paintings as well as furniture were also displayed over numerous rooms. The guided tour was very interesting and informative. Entry only with a group and prebooked tour.Written 10 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

Recommend highlyWritten 25 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - C...Gippsland, Australia95,039 contributionsThis area is an interesting area in as much as it has really crappy signage... I can't reiterate enough how bad that signage is. You turn off Mount Macedon Road... there's the easy bit. After that you will come to a fork in the road, there are wooden signs there that are hard to read. IF you want to go to the Sanatorium Lake, you turn to the left... if you want to get lost, turn to the right.
But seriously the upside of turning to the right is that it heads towards this picnic ground that has beautiful established trees, large grassy areas, delightful areas to picnic... And there are hikes that start here. Getting lost will never be better for you!
So firstly, you can walk dogs here, but they must be on a lead !
Just less than 3k's away is the lake across the fern gullies and through the eucalyptus forests... or you can hike to the Camel's Hump Summit which is over three kilometres away... The Camel's Hump is the highest point of the Macedon Range- and will give you panoramic views that will make you go 'oooooh and ahhhhh'. Win? right!
But what I noticed whilst I was here was how clean the air is, how beautiful the area is and I got over the fact that the signage is awful because it's a great place to be lost at.Written 21 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The stone church was built in 1874 and continued in use until it was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires on February16th, 1983. All that remained was the stone walls of the church. The church was rebuilt as closely as possible to the original using photos and people's memories.
The church as it is today was opened on April 8th 1984. It's a interesting little church, prominently located next to the Trading Post. I can only imagine how this church looks throughout the year as the vine creeps over it. It's a particularly pretty feature of the streetscape.Written 5 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Mount Macedon Cross road takes you into a circular road, as you are leaving the area you will notice this landmark on your left.
Secondly- what the hell is it? This area had an early significance as a natural feature in Central Victoria- particularly as a directional marker to settlers and travellers. Because of it's importance to the local landscape A trigonometrical survey mark was placed on this summit in 1853, later in the late 1860s to be replaced by this cairn.
This cairn was deemed to have been the point from which all surveys in the district originated. It had restoration work in 2016 to ensure it remained here for future generations.
There are information boards at the site and while there is no formal carpark, there is plenty of room to pull over and park your car. It's an interesting landmark and worthy of a few minutes stop here.Written 21 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
