Shearings Tour to Valkenburg Christmas Markets
We took a Shearings tour to Valkenburg as a Christmas break from 22nd to 27th December 2023.
The tour was marred by several issues, some of which, in fairness, cannot be put down to Shearings.
The first issue was that the feeder coach we travelled down to the Stop 24 exchange hub had a very noisy transmission and appeared to keep veering across the motorway lane it was travelling in. Not a comfortable journey.
At Stop 24, the coach exchange hub near Folkestone we transferred to our tour coach to head to Dover where we found that the French passport staff were on strike with only one young lady to deal with all the coach passengers, resulting in a two hour delay so we missed our ferry booking.
We only had one driver rather than the usual two which caused some problems but our driver Paul did a sterling one-man job and looked after us very well indeed.
On our return journey he ensured that we were at Calais in good time for our booked ferry time, not wanting a repeat performance of the outward journey.
We boarded the P&O Pioneer on time and when our sailing time arrived we were advised of a twenty to forty minute delay. After some forty minutes had passed we were again informed of another similar delay, evidently due to refuelling problems. The ship eventually sailed some two hours late. Again, Shearings can not be blamed for the Ferry delays.
However, arriving again at the Stop 24 coach exchange hub, we were transferred to our homeward bound coach, our ultimate destination being Darlington. We departed on this journey at 6.00pm still of course, running two hours late.
The coach driver informed us that we would be taken to Wetherby services after several stops, where we would be collected by a Taxi or Minibus for our onward travel home to Darlington.
The term ‘Minibus’ was an accurate description of the vehicle sent to collect us, it was the size of a standard Transit van, three seats across the back of the cabin space and three folding ‘Dickie Seats’ across the area behind the driver and one seat beside him..
This was a totally unacceptable situation, expecting passengers of over seventy years of age to travel on seats which were obviously intended for transporting people on local urban journeys, not for what turned out to be two hours on a mix of motorway and rural roads. All seats in this van were occupied on this journey and all passengers were seniors.
Passengers were to be dropped off in Darlington, Bishop Auckland and South Shields and that would have been the sensible order for these stops. However, the driver had been given the order to stop first at Bishop Auckland, which he arrived at by a very round about route, then Darlington followed by South Shields. This meant going round a circular route, coming back on himself before again covering ground already travelled over earlier, to take the final passengers to South Shields.
We arrived in Darlington at 2.30am the following morning after a journey time of eight and a half hours from Stop 24!
This was indeed a very sad end to a trip which was already marred by other problems and reflects very badly on Shearings giving the impression that they had our money, now just get us out of their way.
If anyone is considering booking a tour abroad with this Company, we would urge them to take great care and make detailed enquiries as to all modes of transport involved as their after market care and concern is abysmal.
Not a pleasant experience from what we had understood to be a leading tour company operator.
