Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Brian TLondon, UK8,091 contributionsIf you happen to be passing through the small former coal-mining town of Alfreton in Derbyshire, do stop off for a short while and take a look at the beautiful Parish Church of St Martin (sometimes referred to as St Martin of Tours). It’s down a short laneway just off Church Street in the town.
The church is steeped in history. Parts of the current building, namely the arch which opens from the tower to the nave, and a slab incised with the head of a sepulchral cross which has been fixed to the chancel wall, date from the 12th century. Some of the additional arcade of arches were erected about 1320, with the eastern-most arches being added in 1868 when the chancel was being extended. The tower itself is said to have been built at the beginning of the 15th century, and has a number of bells which date from 1627 to 1780.
The current graceful mellow sandstone church was the result of enlargements made in 1868-9 to a smaller church building of roughly the same style that was on the site in the 1830s. The church is usually open for services only, so visitors may not get to see the interior; I was fortunate to see the interior of the church during the summer when the church was being prepared for a concert and I was permitted to have a look around.. The interior is beautiful in the simplicity of its graceful arches. It’s most notable feature is the beautifully carved rood screen. There’s also a beautiful reredos behind the altar, and some lovely Victorian stained glass windows. You’ll also notice some monuments to the Palmer-Morewood family; the family lived at nearby Alfreton Hall and were industrialists in the area and benefactors to the church.
The church is set amidst a beautifully maintained garden. It is an absolute picture of loveliness during the spring and summer months, and well-wort a visit just for that feature. To the side of the church, amongst the trees, is a nicely-maintained burial ground; the engravings on the tombstones make interesting reading, and will give you an insight into some of the locals of the area who are buried there. If you follow the path past the entrance to the church, and walk to the end of the little lane, you’ll be afforded with some lovely views across the Derbyshire Dales, with Crich Stand in the distance.
It's certainly worth a visit.Written 29 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There’s so much open space and woodland paths to wander away from anyone else. Nature at its best alongside open spaces for picnicking, ball games etc. An excellent asset for Alfreton.Written 5 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Brian TLondon, UK8,091 contributionsWhy review a war memorial such as this? After all, most towns and villages across the U.K. will have one. Some are grandiose, occupying prominent town locations. Others are smaller constructs, in a park or garden; and some are simple plaques on a stone in a lesser known spot.
Recently I walked passed the quite imposing war memorial in Alfreton. It specifically commemorates the men who lost their lives in World War I, though these days such memorials have a wider commemoration, of all lives lost in the conflicts of modern times. There were many wreaths and little wooden crosses there, some probably from Remembrance Sunday in November. What particularly struck me was how far people had travelled to place a memorial memento at this one... from London, Somerset, Lancashire and Herefordshire as well as locally. It indicated that memorials such as this are significant to many, and whilst they may not have universal appeal or need to figure in your itinerary as you are touring a particular area, those with a personal interest in a particular memorial will want to know the practicalities for an easy to visit.
The Alfreton War Memorial is located on a traffic island at the junction of King Street (the A61) and Church Street. There should be a parking spot to the left (facing the memorial) or in paid parking lots on Roger’s Lane, just off High Street, and only a short walk away. There's also seating directly in from of the memorial, for your contemplation and prayer.Written 26 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There were stalls arranged in their heritage orchard selling all sorts of local produce. They do vineyard tours and tastings too.Written 19 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- brianbaconheanor2017Derby, UK927 contributionsI always look at this fountain as I cross the town . It has seen seen several locations at least it is within a stone throw from its original location at limes ave/high St junction placed there at the original location of Dr Bingham’s house it’s a pity that it’s not working fountain but still a living memorial to one of Alfreton’s well known BenefactorsWritten 23 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
