This is the must see view of Florence that appears on a vast amount of publicity and postcards.
If you are fit you can walk up from the river side. You can see the Piazzale from the city so judge for yourselves whether you are able. There are city buses and the Hop On Hop Off stops there. As we had a ticket for the HOHO we used it to come back and walk down.
Recommended just for the memory (rather like the Mount of Olives view in Jerusalem).

I booked in advance to get in as soon as the gallery opened and it was really worth it. The second floor (where the visit starts) was relatively quiet for about an hour and I did not queue at all to see the Tribune room. The whole gallery got incredibly busy later - as busy as the Louvre on a bad day!

If you use a wheelchair or have any difficulty walking or climbing stairs (there are many, many flights to the second floor, not just two!), ask the staff at the bottom of the stairs to take you to a lift. The main lift is currently (March 2025) being refurbished, but staff can walk with you a little way outside and around a corner - they have to be with you to use their pass.

The staff member who took me there was so friendly and helpful so do not hesitate to ask them.

When in Florence, get to the cathedral early to see the incredible structure. Lines begin early, and you may easily wait 1 or more. The site begins letting people in around 9:15 andstopsarou d 1pm.

I booked ahead to get in early (8:15) and it was really worth it. Great views of ‘David’ and could admire the work quietly, before it got too busy later.

Do go the Musical Instruments Museum as it is really fascinating. I recommend you get an audioguide as it has audio of the instruments being played which really added value to my visit. I had never heard of a ‘tromba marina’ which is a one-stringed instrument that sounds like a trombone - very surreal, but enjoyable.

Huge range of food and drink available upstairs in this large covered market building. Food is prepared by artisans, no chain outlets. A great plus.
We tried one of the wood fired pizzas, made to order. Excellent. Only 5 - 10 mins to cook.
The artisan ice cream, Badiani Gelato, was delicious. Huge range of flavours and much better value than other gelaterias on the streets as they cost less but same if not larger scoops.
We enjoyed prosecco and chianti at L'Enoteca Sandro Soltani Caffè Sant'Ambrogio , in the corner of the market. Wide choice of wine . Knowledgeable staff.

Piazza del Duomo is definitely one of the top attractions in Florence.

The square was bustling with tourists, as expected, and I noticed that restaurants and cafes around the piazza charge a bit of a premium due to the location. However, there are plenty of options nearby if you’re looking for something more affordable.

I was amazed by the sheer number of visitors, all waiting patiently to enter the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Besides the cathedral, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery, and numerous shops and cafés make it a vibrant public space worth visiting.

The history in Santa Croce is simply amazing. Our guide Dan Harper (family friend) —an expat from the States—was absolutely priceless.

You can reach him at: danharperflorence@gmail.com.

From the tombs and the incredible journey of this church to the stories of Galileo, Michelangelo, Dante, and the Medici family, the experience was unforgettable. Dan’s knowledge of every nook and cranny, every fascinating coincidence, and even the friars who shaped its history made the tour come alive.

The 2.5-hour tour was a true highlight of our trip. And as a bonus, Dan’s local restaurant recommendations were ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, all on a ⭐️⭐️ budget.

    Highly recommend!

The bridge with its arches and medieval design evoke romantic feels amidst the views of the flowing river. Literally flanking it are several artisanal shops and some jewelry stores.

YOU HAVE TO VISIT PALAZZO VECCHIO!! Honestly the outside is so pretty but the inside is breathtakingly beautiful! The staff were very friendly and really helpful as I have to use a walking stick and the lifts are in a closed off section they allow you through. The architecture is just so incredible it's worth every penny, you can get round in an hour but I could of easily spent all day here!

My favorite stop in Florence. My biggest regret is that I thought this would just be a quick visit and only went because it was included in my pass to the Uffizi and Boboli, BUT IT WAS MY FAVORITE and I did not have enough time to see the whole place :-( From the first room I stepped in to, I was speechless. Each room is unique and breathtaking. I would have skipped the entire Uffizi museum to spend more time here. It was so cool to be where the Medici family themselves, and well as many other powerful people actually stayed. There was not a single detail in this place that was spared. It is overwhelming how intricate everything was. I cannot even describe how stunning each ceiling was. I can only imagine the blood, sweat, tears, and time that went in to this palace. Nearly every room made me gasp a little and stand in awe. The Uffizi was mostly the same picture, just different versions over and over and almost all christian/catholic based. Here, the variety is vast and just as incredible, if not more so. The modern art gallery was to die for and the fashion showcase was also amazing. I had to rush through each of these 3 areas as well as the courtyard before closing. This is my one big regret for our 9 days in Italy, not having more time at the Palazzo Pitti.
