Wonderful scenic boat ride on Lake Königssee. We stopped at St. Bartholomä and got off to have a beer and a bite to eat. It was gorgeous! In hindsight I would have left earlier and spent more time hiking around St. Bartholomä and the area around the boat launch that had lots of shops and restaurants. We took a bus from Salzburg to the lake and it was a beautiful drive ending with a gorgeous boat ride. Awesome trip. Would do it again. The only small drawback is the guide in the boat only spoke German. So we couldn’t understand a word he said. I tried using Google translate but it was hard for the microphone to pick up what he said. The ticket counter attendant spoke English as did the waitstaff at St Bartholomä so that was helpful’

Lovely, lovely spot. Truly. The crowds are insane. Way too many people - and no peace and quiet. That was exhausting and unexpected. If you go more than 2 miles into the journey, it starts to thin out but for the first 1.5 miles it’s bumper to bumper traffic.

It seemed an expensive ride, but no regrets going up for what was a smooth ride up the mountain and spectacular views from the top!

Took the boat ride to the church and walked around and then took the boat back to the village. It was a lovely boat ride on the lake to the church. I went in the late afternoon after it had rain for most of the day. By the time, our boat ride started, the weather cleared up and it turned out to be a very nice remainder of the day.

Just have a short boat trip to other shore of Königsee and in 1.5 hours you can climb to the wonderful water fall which is the highest in Germany. Enjoy the fresh milk in the hut close to the hiking trail. A must see.

Writing this down because it was the adventure of a lifetime for me, BUT this adventure is not suitable for people with walking challenges.

    Summary:
The Eiskapelle adventure was enormous fun for my friend and I but not suitable for anyone because of the risk and danger involved. If it rains, don’t go, if it snows, don’t go, if the ground is slippery, don’t go, if visibility is low, don’t go.

Once you leave the path with trees, it takes a good eye to spot the markings for directions, but this is the fun part - you will need to figure out where you can find the Eiskapelle and remember your way home.

Looking back, we experienced such fun because we expected a normal hiking path with super clear signage to the Eiskapelle, so we did not read any trail path maps. This is how our hike turned out totally unexpected when we realised we were in a scenery that looked like in wildlife documentaries, thought we were lost in the wild, and were pressured with time.

    Detailed Notes:
Warning - This is not suitable for kids and elderly with walking challenges. Hiking boots are essential for your own safety/protection. Travel light. Wear waterproof as it might drizzle / rain lightly. Do not go if it's raining/snowing. Avoid solo adventure here.

Warning - the Eiskapelle is naturally formed and could collapse at any time. This is why many tourist information materials have a warning message recommending people to avoid going in. You can still get some nice photos from the entrance of the Eiskapelle, without going in them. It’s already fantastically fun doing the hike.

    How to get there?
Get the 20€ boat return ticket (2 hour total return time, check timetable a day before), take the boat from Schifffahrt Königssee to St. Bartholomä.

Hike from St. Bartholomä to Eiskapelle and return, 9km with 470m elevation gain. You can EASILY spend more than half a day here for more adventure, just note the last boat that takes ALL remaining humans back to civilisation leaves at 6pm.

There are clear signs from St. Bartholomä towards the Eiskapelle until you see the rivers in the huge mountain valley, the walk gets slightly challenging from here. And the fun begins.

(Option A: If you want to increase the challenge and the fun to figure things out yourself, do not read on, and do not look at trail maps - such as Google map which states the exact path from the boat to the Eiskapelle.)

(Option B: If you don’t want to look at trail maps because you want to find the way yourself in the wild, read my descriptions below.)

(Option C: If you want more clarity and know everything in advance and see where you are going, read this official page, especially its trail map at the bottom of the page, and my descriptions below.)

Keep walking alongside the river until you are in the large middle ground of the valley where two yellow colour warning signs are located (warning of falling stones).

Next, keep walking forward while trying to spot a small black hole on your right that is surrounded by chalky white colours. Congratulations, you’ve found one of the Eiskapelle and glaciers!

This Eiskapelle is located slightly high up from the Watzmann mountain foot. You should be aware that this cave is challenging to climb up but there is a lower cave on its left. If you decide to climb up the right side cave, do be extra careful of the slippery stones. Navigate your routes in advance to avoid falling/slipping.

The left side cave is more easily accessible than the right side cave but you cannot see it before you get nearer. So you need to just have faith, go towards the chalky white glacier on the left side, climb up just a little until the left cave becomes visible to you. Congratulations, you’ve found the second Eiskapelle!

A nice family pool with a spacious lawn. There is a terrace for drinks and snacks. The pool has excellent changing rooms and showers. The parking area is unfortunately not too large.

Not far away from the crowded street that leads to the boats on the lake, lies a great and discreet place dedicated to Romy Schneider, the certainly most important actor of the area. A must do for fans and for those willing to see some unique pieces out of her youth and life achievements.

It's a lovely little town and well worth wandering around the marktplatz, especially as the whole thing only takes about 10 minutes.

It's a relatively easy walk, assuming reasonable mobility and fitness, and a clearly defined and safe trail, that isn't signposted, but reached by heading toward Obersee from St Bartholomew's. About an hour or so, round-trip.
