The Montecatini Funicular connects Montecatini Terme to Montecatini Alto. We (me, wife, 15yo, 11yo, 8yo) walked from our hotel near the funicular in Terme to Alto, getting caught in the dark on the way up. This was more exciting than some of our party bargained for, though Montecatini Alto was very nice. Spectacular views from the top, a bustling town square with restaurants, cafes, and live music, and (since it was the Christmas season) lots of festive decorations made the trek very much worth it, but there was no question of trying to try to walk back in the dark. The funicular was very classic and cute, provided great viewing of the scenery, and was not too long (~10 min.), but slow enough to really drink it all in. It is possible to stand on the outside of the car for even better viewing, but even the somewhat cozy inside gives a scenic and pleasant ride (even in the dark). The Montecatini funicular is not expensive, and buying tickets on the spot at the top was very easy. The funicular would be a pleasant small adventure for a family, especially with young children, all in itself. For us, enabling access to Montecatini Alto was the big draw. I have no real complaints about it, it was just not exciting enough for a 5 rating.

The first time we went up to montecatini alto we went in the funicular railway and then enjoyed walking around the town/village. We enjoyed wine and ice cream in the pretty square.
I wanted to also walk up but really struggled to find any maps or guidance online apart from one writer on trip adviser who gave some guidance about finding the footpath near the funicular railway - thank you!
If you go up the lane just to the right of the funicular it soon turns into a footpath which makes it's way up the hill close to the funicular. It took me 30 minutes to get up to the top and I was going quite slowly. It was less steep than I expected.
At the bottom by the funicular and at other places around montecatini alto there are small faded maps labelled 'treking'. They show various footpaths but are not very clear. I walked up route A.
Near the top there are some new wooden signs pointing to various destinations and giving approximate times for the walk.
When I came down I chose route B which was a bit further and seemed much more steep even though it was traversing the hillside. It came out near viale fideli.
I definitely recommend the walk if you want to enjoy bit of the countryside and some olive groves!

We were taken around the caves by Anna on a tour lasting about 40 minutes. As well as explaining the history of the caves and showing us the various formations, she pointed out the wildlife - bats, frogs, spiders etc. She was very enthusiastic and made the tour very interesting.

Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

The performance was in a conference room in the basement of a hotel. My wife and I sat center, second row. We were probably the youngest in the crowd. For context, I am a 55 year old dude who mostly listens to electronic music, punk etc - and occasionally listen to composers like Arvo Part and Gorecki.

What the hell happened to me that night, I don't know. I was completely overwhelmed by the performances. I know that sounds crazy! I have never heard anything so spectacular in all my life (and I have seen operas in opera houses before, bored to tears). I couldn't hold back my tears I was so emotional during some of the songs (especially from the soprano) - I was mortified!! Maybe I am just uncultured and needed the right intimate setting to appreciate opera?

So now I love opera (I am listening to Les Pecheurs de perles by Bizet as I type this). All my life before this point I couldn't understand the appeal. And now ... it gives me shivers and brings me to tears - and I don't even know wtf they are saying. And all thanks to this performance during our holiday in Montecatini.

Italy gave us a wonderful, memorable vacation... and, for whatever personal reasons I can't identify... this show was life changing to me. Maybe it will be for you, too?

Deborah Vincenti, Giovanni Cervelli, Massimo Naccarato, Maria Teresa Guarracino: thank you.

This place is a beautiful building for a wander around and a coffee. Unfortunately there’s not a great deal of information given about it. Some previous reviewers have mentioned trying the different waters. We saw people wandering around with glass mugs drinking the waters but when we asked, we were told that you could only have the water with a medical note! Yet if you’d have had a spare cup of water bottle with you, nobody would have stopped you getting any…… 🤷🏻‍♀️

As the title says, the food is of a higher standard than pretty much anywhere else within Montecatini. Best to book ahead during peak season. We had to wait 30 minutes for table but it can also just be your luck when you show up. Our servers were very friendly and helpful in recommending accompanying wine with our meal. Given the location, it's really a must-do kinda thing on your holiday. Get some amazing snaps from the view next to the church, eat some great food, drink wine and then enjoy the funicolare on the way back down.

Station is nice and clean, easily accessible for hotels in the town and ideally placed as a base to explore Tuscany.
Trains were frequent and ran to time.
Unfortunately we found the ticket machines tough to use, even when following in English!
There was not a ticket office that we could use.
Suggest tickets are bought on line and then it would all be easy.

Fontana Guidotti is a lovely fountain located in Piazza del Popolo in Montecatini Terme. It is a great landmark to use to meet at when strolling about the area. There are several shops and restaurants nearby. The sound of the water raining down into the pool around the fountain is quite calming.

Nice place to walk and eat, and see the sites, in Montecatini. A good hub from which to explore outward around town.

I went to Sunday Mass. The church looks modern and is probably not that old, so wouldn't recommend it as a tourist site. But they had a booklet with the entire Mass available, which was great for this non-Italian speaking attendee. I understood enough from the text to follow along.

The Mo.C.A. Montecatini Contemporary Art museum is a not to be missed treasure that is well worth stopping by and looking through. Admission is by donation, or free and almost everyone will find something to appreciate or admire within its walls from older, more classical style to newer graffiti style art. One could easily spend a few hours here strolling around the contrasting exhibits. It reinforced to me that art comes in many different shapes, styles and sizes. I gave it 5 stars because of it's central location and low/no cost admission.
