Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Bandit-OneLucerne, Switzerland10,494 contributionsCame from Rome to board the "Odyssey of the Seas" this October. It's not the biggest or most modern port around, but was just fine.
Depending on traffic it's a 70-90min drive away from Central Rome. It's quite common knowledge that this port is not in Rome itself. Which would be difficult, since Rome is not a city by the ocean.
There are trains, shuttles and busses going to port and back to town. We chose a private transfer though, booked through the official port website. So the car drove directly to the Cruise Ship and also from the Cruise Ship back to town. Very convenient.
We were here quite early around 9.30 with a boarding time of 12.30. But we were allowed to go inside the building at around 10am already. There was already a line, but only about 30-50 people yet. The line could have been organised a bit better, we were moved 2-3 times. But nothing too stressful.
After 10am we were checking in upstairs in the building already. The security check organised by the Italian authorities was quick and smooth.
There's a small shop with snacks and more upstairs in the waiting area. Also some restrooms and plenty of space to sit. Things moved quickly and we boarded the ship at around 11am already.
It's not a fancy Cruise Port but does what it needs to. And it's organised well enough. On the way back our transport already waited for us - booked it weeks before cruising. Make sure you know how to get back to Rome (or any other city) when disembarking. Because there will be a lot more people than when embarking. Best to organise it before your cruise already.Written 13 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Didn't want to venture into Rome but still wanted to see head out and discover what we could locally. Found out about Terme Taurine online - it is open from 9.30am - 1pm. We were going to catch a bus from the train station as per previous reviews but were told by the shuttle bus driver who rang the bus company for us, that there was no bus running there so best to catch a taxi. He recommended we pay no more than 20Euro which was helpful. We spoke with a taxi driver who wanted 50E to take us out there. We finally negotiated him down to 30E each way as long as he waited for us for the hour we planned to be there. He agreed - not sure if it was because it was rainy, we were the only ship in port, it's shoulder season - but we were glad to know we had transport there and back. He tried to discourage us from going even when we were in the taxi saying there wasn't much to see there and we'd be better going into Rome but we didn't stated we wanted to go to Terme Taurine. Arrived after a max 15min drive. It looked very run down from the office side. Found the person who was in the office, paid 5Euro each and had the best time wandering around discovering this incredible place. Yes, it's a bit run down, yes, it's easy to see everything in an hour. There are QR codes on the different signposts to explain things. We didn't use them as it was pouring and we were happy to discover and read for ourselves but if I had more time I would have used the codes. The signs were helpful. It's basically walking in a big circle around the various buildings. Loved the HUGE pool and other pools they used. I was glad we went there even though it is a small site - it is unique and with some TLC would be even better. It's a shame it's not had some time and money spent on it as I'm sure many visitors to Civitavecchia would enjoy a trip out there and then spend some time browsing in town rather than racing into Rome. So much scope to make it more tourist friendly and educational for others.Written 27 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA19,109 contributionsMaybe the most impressive structure at the harbor, a fortress that is left from the old city walls. You can easily see how it protected the old city from attacks from the sea. Very thick walls.Written 31 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA19,109 contributionsWe were killing time, waiting for the train to Rome. We wandered through this plaza and loved the ambience and enjoyed the little fountain. It is along the waterfront and harbor and near the train station.Written 4 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David SMiddlesbrough, UK2,396 contributionsCivitavecchia Cathedral is the main church of the city and is devoted to Saint Francis of Assisi. Stands loud and proud in the town centre. Absolutely vast from the outside, the inner is slightly less imposing but is still an atmospheric delight. Perhaps not as oppulant as you might expect, this working Cathedral is truly beautiful. Free to enter. Very busy with touring groups.Written 18 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA19,109 contributionsWe wandered through this market area while we were killing time before our train trip to Rome. Loved the display of the fresh fruit and vegies. And the friendly vendors were a lot of fun.Written 5 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AkumukPaignton, UK767 contributionsThis museum, which has free entry, is small but very informative about the city. The ground floor has well documented artefacts with good English translations. However the upper level, which also houses interesting exhibits, has no information in English for the visitor.Written 11 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SHK1 contributionGood variety of slides and pools. Great fun day out. All the queues were in the blazing sun though! Almost unbearable in the August sunshine, and by the afternoon the tiles were almost too hot to stand on in bare feet (which you have to). Would only take a small amount of organisation to make use of shade already available or put up some shelter. Even the Italians were dipping in and out of nearby shaded spots, not just us fairskinned Brits! Plenty of shade for the sun loungers though.
Quite a few disused areas just left to waste away, would look nicer if they were either completely taken away or put back to use.

Worth a quick visit if you are walking from the port to the beach or vice versa.Written 11 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AAADave56 contributionsWe were on a bus tour from our ship and selected this stop. It was a very picturesque setting and interesting small church and convent. When we visited , there were only three nuns living there and we saw two of them. The grounds are very picturesque, high on a hill and with beautiful flowers all around. There is a small gift shop and my wife bought some reasonably priced extra virgin olive oil. The two negatives are that the steps are somewhat uneven with no railings on much of them and there is only one toilet for both men and women, so with a bus load of people that can result in a delay. We enjoyed it.Written 19 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA19,109 contributionsA very small gate that is a remnant of the old city walls. And this was the entrance to the city from the harbor. - RonL40Utica, NY3,708 contributionsNot as spectacular as some of the churches you might find in Rome and Florence, but a very nice city church that has a sense of sacredness. A place of prayer.Written 5 June 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
