Really beautiful place to visit and worth it for the lovely boat trip alone! The views are spectacular. The only problem is that the information is very limited and so you don't learn as much as would be good.

This a lovely sandy beach. However it is easily overrun by tourists embarking from the many boat trips that moor up for a couple of hours. It would be best to time a visit for early morning or late afternoon. To walk to the beach ( as we did ) head for the windmills walking from the harbour in Elounda pass the fish restaurants and over a small stone bridge. Pass the windmills and stay on the track for another 100 m or so. The road to the beach veers to the right at which point there is a helpful sign post announcing the beach is 3 Km. Follow the path uphill on a clear unmade track until you meet a series of small car parks at the top of the hill.. Look for the red and white signs on the rocks and head off to the right down a rocky incline again signposted by helpful red and white painted signs on the stones. The beach should then greet you. The walk to the beach is lovely and passes some of the most colourful sea imaginable! There are no facilities whatsoever on the beach. Take some water! There are plenty of watering holes on the way back into Elounda to fortify intrepid explorers!

This is a lovely beach for paddling a gentle swim in calm seas and lounging on a sun lounger. Fair prices - you can lounge for a whole day for 3 euros, plus 2 for a parasol. Beautiful views. Free open air showers to wash off the sand before you go home. Good public loos. Lots of shops, tavernas, restaurants and cafes nearby.

The original buildings from previous occupiers are slowly being restored. There are some information boards in English about the island’s history. It wasn’t crowded in mid- November. We hired a car and drove from the Port of Aghios Nikolaus to Plaka. Then we took a 10 minute boat ride across to the island. It was 12 Euros return and 4 Euros entry to the island. The island entry may have been reduced by 50% because it was off season. The boat goes on the hour, and you don’t need more than 1 hour on the island. There was no operational toilet on the island when we were there (it was broken) and a bush was the only alternative. Not ideal for an isolated, remote tourist attraction.

The beach is very clean, with all the facilities that you need (showers, changing rooms, toilets). The water is crystal clear, with a "Blue Flag" certification. I recommend the beach for everyone.

It is true that, as a beach, there are many better around. It has large stones and can be uncomfortable unless you have the right equipment.

Ignoring that, it is beautiful. The views are stunning, you get to see all the history around you and the water is crystal clear. The sea is warm and feels very safe.

The island gets very hot so this is a nice place to cool down after visiting all the joys of the Spinalonga.

Ok you have to do a bit of walking and looking around, we took the turning towards the taverna and parked in the car park and then walked past the house, don’t get it confused with the stagnant pools but walk a bit further and you come to a little headland with the cafe and church on the opposite side. There is a lot of pottery shards lying around and being washed into the sea. I’m told that the mosaic is by the little church on the other side. Didn’t get chance to snorkel was it was quite late but would consider and afternoon dip at some point for a better look

We had lunch in the small resort town of Elounda, which is very pleasant, certainly the part near the harbour. In the harbour there are many small and colourful boats, it is also easy to take from here a boat to Spinalonga. Along the harbour there are mostly restaurants, with the odd tourist shop, has very much a seaside resort town feeling to it. Near the harbour is also the church with separate belfry, one of the few churches I found open on my trip in Crete. The church is a quite nice orthodox church, with the typical wall and ceiling decorations .

Sun beds and shades are available at 2.50 euros each. Close to amenities and takeaway snacks are avaible nearby to take back to the beach. Changing booths are free to use and public toilets are near the market square and on the pier.

It’s hard not to feel emotional looking at the graves of all those poor people who had lived and died on the island. The view across the bay is stunning and the little chapel is also worth a look.
