We took the metro from the Acropolis to Piraeus today. It was an experience. We tried to get directions from a station agent, but didn't really understand them and we don't speak Greek so I have no problem with the agent. The signage in the station did not include a complete system map. We came across some English speaking tourists who had a map and that helped. However, the system diagrams in the car were not in sync with the map we saw and the transfer station wasn't on them. Fortunately the stations are announced and we found where we needed to change. The Red Line stations and cars were modern, clean and air conditioned. We transferred to the Green Line where walking into the platform was like walking into a different, much older world. The cars did not seem to be airconditioned and there was a lot of graffiti. Most of the trip on the Green Line was on a right away well above street level so we got to see where we were. The ride was very comfortable compared to the jolting and rattling bus ride into Athens. The Piraeus station is an architectural gem and looks like it was built as a train depot. The metro was crowded, but I never felt unsafe. A one day travel card good on bus, metro, trolley bus and tram was 4.1 euros, a great bargain.

We walked to this via the steps a lovely local lady called the killing steps. Thus we thought a lift up the hill is advisable. It’s a modern funicular. No ambience. All in a tunnel too so no view. Bought return ticket. Walked back to get view. Funicular in Budapest is more rustic and you get the view. That said, saves a walk on a roasting day and the hill top is lovely with a beautiful church filled with fragrant incense.

We took the round trip train from Athens to Kalambaka. The train was prompt and the train was clean.

However, the trainose website is TERRIBLE. We traveled in May 22, 2022 but the website didn't release its schedule or seats until May 9th. I got first class tickets for a family of 4 with 2 young children (4 and 6 yo). 2 days before my trip, the train company emailed me and said I have booked the handicapped seats/non existent seats due to technical mistake from their part, and they changed my tickets to coach class. There was no offer of refunding the price difference. I wasn't happy but I wasn't going to fuss about it. But when we were boarding, those coach seats were actually occupied. The train website doubled booked the seat! After some stress and communication, the train conductor put us in empty seats in first class (and some other wonderful passengers volunteered to move their seats so we could sit together with our young children). And similar thing happened on our return train tickets back to Athens. I'm happy that at the end it was resolved. But we were traveling in low season now. I can't imagine what would happen if the train was full during high season.

If I have to travel on this train again, I'd book through a third party who has experience dealing with these online train tickets.

The buses are fine and it is a cheap way to travel but getting tickets is a nightmare, easiest way book online.
Pitfalls of the Athens bus station, its a good hours walk from central Athens. Obviously Greek is the main language so you expect some difficulty but getting to the point where the ticket seller can't be bothered to arrange a return ticket because well he can't be bothered...
Finally top tip the taxi rank outside bus station is a rip off . 35€ to go to Aegina port, when we arrived at the port his meter read 20€ which he hid from view , nice little scam they have going ...

As a first time foreign visitor, once I got settled in my hotel I was pleasantly surprised how generally friendly and easy to use all four Metro lines are, at least within in the main city during daylight, and also the branches to Piraeus Port and the Airport (below). A 10+1 trip ticket cost 13.50 euro (1.23 euro per 90 minute ride). Just tap your ticket; no exit minders; get back on at no charge if it is under the 90 min. Signs are clear and in English and Greek, maps are everywhere. Other reviewers warn of pickpockets and gang theft so do take note, but I never saw that myself. My Red Line stop (Metaxourghio) was 50 ft. from the hotel and got me to all the major sites. Notes: 1) the Airport costs 10 euro, but is fast and better for one rider than my 38 euro cab ride on arrival. 2) Graffiti is overwhelming on most underground cars, a combination of disgusting and verging on art, if illegal.

Kostas was an exceptional driver! Attentive and extremely knowledgeable about his beloved Greece. My daughter and I traveled throughout mainland Greece with Kostas to see many of Greece’s treasures: Delphi, Corinth, Mycenae, and more. Kostas’ hospitality made us feel like we were traveling with a dear friend by the end of the trip! Thank you for a wonderful trip, Kostas!

I am a travel agent and I am escorting a family of clients throughout Greece. I had the great pleasure of exploring the Peloponnese and beyond on a multi-day tour with the most AMAZING driver!! George took amazing care of us. Not only did he very professionally get us from one point to the next as in our itinerary, he also made suggestions for incredible stops along the way that we certainly would have missed out on as we’d never heard of them ourselves. He was incredibly kind and felt like part of the family almost immediately. I highly highly recommend My Athens Transfers, and I encourage you to ask for George.

Ordered for a group of 31 people a transfer from the airport to the city and back, a sightseeing tour of the city and a trip to Meteora. Everything was very good. Professional Russian-speaking guide. All our issues have been resolved. I recommend. I also want to advise, as there are many groups from Ukraine, to have a Ukrainian-speaking guide.

We had the pleasure of having Alexis as our driver from Athens to Nafpaktos. To our surprise, he also became our personal tour guide- making stops along the way at places such as the Corinth Canal. We appreciate that he took the time to explain different famous landmarks and safety tips along the way… not too mention he takes great pictures! He was kind and personable which made the long drive seem too short. His vehicle was clean and comfortable. 4 of us and our luggage fit comfortably. We wish we had more time with you Alexis! Thank you for a great start to our trip and for all of the information you sent to us afterwards! We will definitely be using your services again and recommend you to others.

Steven worked his way into our circle of trust very quickly and has been the rock in which we depend upon with our frequent visits to Athens. Whether it’s an airport pickup, business trip or early morning navigation to the port, Smiley is the Man.
