Points of Interest & Landmarks
The mountaineers’ cemetery is a moving reminder of the accidents that have occurred in the mountains around Zermatt. The tranquil site is a memorial to all climbers who have lost their lives here. The inscriptions reveal that women and men from all over the world have died on the Matterhorn, Täschhorn, Weisshorn, Liskamm, Obergabelhorn and on the Monte Rosa massif. At the mountaineers’ cemetery, visitors can see the graves of about 50 climbers who perished in the surrounding mountains. Most date from the 19th century, some from the early-20th century. Grave of two climbers from the first ascent of the Matterhorn One gravestone is an exception. It commemorates two famous climbers who died naturally rather than on the mountain: Peter and Peter Taugwalder, father and son. These were the mountain guides of the first person to climb the Matterhorn, Edward Whymper. Only these three out of the original party of seven returned to Zermatt alive. The ascent, on 14 July 1865, was a success: on the way back down, however, four of the climbers fell to their deaths, including Michel-Auguste Croz, a mountain guide from Chamonix. His gravestone stands beside that of the two Taugwalders. Two of the English climbers who died on the descent were laid to rest at the English Church in Zermatt: D. Robert Hadow is buried outside, while the Reverend Charles Hudson lies by the church altar. The third English climber who lost his life on the expedition, Lord Francis Douglas, has no grave as his body was never found. Another tombstone in the mountaineers’ cemetery belongs to probably the most famous female mountaineer of the 19th and 20th centuries: Eleonore Noll-Hasenclever (1880–1925). She lost her life as she descended the Bishorn on 18 August 1925, carried away by an avalanche. Symbols of mourning Some of the memorial stones bear candles and flowers left by relatives and fellow climbers. In some cases, the stones reveal the causes of accidents: an avalanche, a rockfall, a crevasse. One memorial to a young climber carries a simple and striking statement: “I chose to climb”. The mountaineer’s own red ice axe adorns the stone, along with the US flag.

An engaging narrative is displayed, with the main attraction being the majestically challenging mountain itself.

Formidable obstacles stood in the way of ascending to the pinnacle. The first ascent in 1865 ended in tragedy with the loss of four of the seven strong team.

Reflecting its draw for alpinists and climbers, around 500 have died on the mountain making it one of the most dangerous peaks in the world.

Unfortunately, the Toblerone bar design changed in Switzerland and so it didn't look perfect when superimposed with the Matterhorn. But if you forgot, it's ok, buy one regardless, it's close enough though.

The reflection of the lake made this place iconic. Just watch out with the people hiking further down, they easily ruin the view. Thankfully, they disappear quickly, so pack a lot of patience when trying to get that perfect reflective shot of the Matterhorn!

Worth the walk uphill to see the beautiful views. It costs about $5 but totally worth it. Not a long walk but steep stairs

Had to cancel our reservation due to medical reasons, but nonetheless - all contact with Zermatters was a good experience. They respond very quick, very polite, and re-payment was handled within hours on a sunday morning. Leaves a very thrustworthy impression. Would not hesitate to contact them another time.

Beautifully and neatly laid out it is a perfect place for a final repose.

At the foot of the majesty of the mountains and with a little chapel, it is a tranquil area for some quiet reflection.

Stunning views on this really lovely walk, mostly very well signposted. We some managed to miss a lake between the second and 3rd lakes which was a little disappointing. We stopped at the Fulalp Restaurant for delicious rosti and complimentary salad! I would certainly recommend this hike.
I am a very irregular hiker though walk to work every day if you are trying to judge the fitness level required, the start is mostly uphill then down hill for the rest of the walk after Fulalp. It is marked as a red path but we found it safe and no big drops etc.

Incredibly challenging hike but so rewarding. We got the best views of the Matterhorn after 3 hours of a challenging ascent, but after the ascent it was a relaxed and easy journey home. The total 20km trail took us just over 7 hours with breaks included. Felt safe on this trail the whole time with no steep dropoffs. Also had the trail to ourselves for the grand majority of the day, passing only 10 people or so the entire time!
