What travellers are saying
- Greg JPennsylvania132 contributionsIncredibly peaceful and restful. I've been multiple times, but every time in Mainz, I need to stop in. The blue windows all around the church make the light so comforting and Chagall's art is sublime. There is no cost to enter and its generally quiet. Highly recommend!Written 17 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- p gCanberra, Australia17 contributionsAmazing collection of early printed material and printing technology; also covered the equally fascinating history of East Asian printing. Layout not always clear; some but not all of the information was translated into English.Written 15 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tailsockRaleigh, NC1,006 contributionsHad an opportunity to explore the Mainzer Dom while walking around the marktplatz. Rain had just begun to move in so the timing was very fortunate. It's a vast, old, historic church with plenty to keep you busy. Huge, beautiful old brick building from the outside that burns a brilliant red/orange in the late afternoon sun. It's visible from many parts of the city. Entry was free. We went in and looked around, sat and prayed, and waited for the rain to die down. Very quiet inside. The Chagall stained glass windows were not as impressive without light to illuminate it from the outside so that was a bummer. That's the downside of a rainy day I suppose. Didn't have another opportunity to visit as the Upper Middle Rhine sights were our main objective for staying in Mainz.Written 30 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SyrinxSoundsVictoria, Canada1,412 contributionsLoved wandering the Saturday market. What great people watching. So many products to see and enjoy. It's strawberry season, and they were so beautiful. My only regret is that I wasn't confident enough with my German to go buy a box to take with me. Had I planned ahead better, I would have come armed with a few phrases and euro-cash.
I particularly liked how relatively quiet it was. No loud music or boisterous acts. I was able to just enjoy the market.
Keep an eye on the time. We went into a cafe for lunch with the market in full swing, and came out an hour later with the whole plaza empty of stalls.

This is the home ground for FC Mainz 05. We had previously bought two tickets online for the princely sum of 12,00€ each. We drove down from the north of North Rhein Westphalia and we were directed to the area for the away fans (in our case supporting Bayer 04 Leverkusen). We were thrilled to be sent to a car park area exactly next to the stadium for the fee of 5,00€. Incredibly good value.
Having negotiated the COVID and other normal security checks we found our way to our block easily enough. The stadium is quite new, has good facilities including decent washrooms, a snack bar (try the spicy Feuerwurst) and terraces where we had a decent view over the whole pitch.
We were warned that the gates at the exit at the end of the game would only open 30 minutes after the final whistle. But that wasn't a problem for us.
All in all an excellent stadium where we, as away team fans, were treated extremely well. Well, we did lose after all... We first visited it in 2008. So much to see here - all around and under one's feet.
The temple was founded during the 1st century and active until at least the 3rd century. Amazingly you get a free tour!Written 12 October 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PatrickLLLLHong Kong, China196 contributionsAdmission is free and relics of the Roman boats plying the Rhine probably can be found in this museum only. Pity that the exhibition does not offer full translation in English. Still, it is very interesting just to look at the originals and reproductions of patrol boats and seagoing vessels.Written 16 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AllanJGJWellington, New Zealand4,407 contributionsWe stumbled across this interesting fountain by chance. Looks a bit of a mess from a distance but if you get up close you an see all the carnival characters that give the fountain its name. Well made and unique if not to everyone's taste. There are also one or two statues in the same area.Written 24 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kelly BIowa5,605 contributionsI’m kind of surprised that this isn’t the number one ranked church in Mainz. I thought that the interior was absolutely stunning. Done in an elaborate baroque style, I hardly knew where to look first. The ceilings, walls, balcony, just everything is decorated. It’s an easy walk from the Mainz Cathedral . Although it’s much smaller than that cathedral, it’s beautiful.Written 24 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Susanne CDublin, Ireland7 contributionsI recently participated in an English-speaking group tour of Mainzer Unterwelten. This is an underground tour near Fort Josef.
Our wonderful tour guide (Rainer) explained the history of the site. It was originally built between 1710-1730 as a defence fort but was later used as barracks for Prussian, French and other troops. During WW2, Fort Josef was a civil air shelter, hit by allied bombing several times.
It was quite surreal being underground and going down the various tunnels listening to our guide tell us the history of the site. It was hard to think how many people had sheltered down there during the war in dark, cramped conditions. We were lucky in comparison and had hard hats and torches while making our way through the tunnels.
I really enjoyed the tour....it brought home how much history Mainz has and what its inhabitants have been through.Written 14 October 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If you appreciate the style of this church you might also wish to see St. Augustine's Church which is located very close to the Cathedral.Written 19 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
