- Janine Tranter1 contributionI recently took a day trip tour of King Ludwig's castles, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From start to finish, our guide, Deyse, made the day exceptional. She was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, always ensuring that we were comfortable, especially since we were traveling with our 8-month-old. She offered great tips on how to navigate the castles with a baby, and her thoughtful suggestions made everything much easier.
Our visit to Neuschwanstein Castle was absolutely breathtaking. The fairy-tale setting, perched on the cliffs, looked like something out of a dream. The views were spectacular, and walking through the castle's rooms felt like stepping back in time. Deyse provided us with fascinating historical details about the castle and King Ludwig II, enriching the experience.
The whole day felt perfectly paced, and Deyse’s attention to detail made it stress-free, even with a young child in tow. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the area, and I’m especially grateful for Deyse's kindness and professionalism throughout the day. From the Hauptbahnhof Station we travelled on the S2 line to Dachau. (The train is heading towards either Petershausen or Altomunster).
An early review told us that if we already had the M1 city train ticket we only needed to purchase a return ticket from Karlsradt to Dachua rather than a full ticket (cost about 2.5 Euros) - validate this ticket before you start the journey + this can also be used for the bus to the camp.
The bus to the camp is downstairs from the train platform - Bus number 726. The bus takes about 10 minutes and stops outside the entrance to the camp site.
We did a self guided tour using the audio guide which was very informative and we enjoyed seeing at our own pace. A sad place but so important to visit to help to understand the concentration camp reality and hopelessness. The memorial wall saying "Never Again" says it all. Some form of photo id is required as a deposit for the audio guide - my drivers licence worked a treat.
The buses return to the station frequently.

Although it was rainy and snowy most of the day, the tour guide, Monika, made the trip feel great! The tour gave us enough time to see everything without dragging or feeling rushed.
