The Heidelberg Palace’s reputation as a cultural and historic site is fully deserved. The architecture and history here are remarkable, and the views are memorable. In addition, the German Pharmacy Museum is quite interesting, not to mention highly unusual. But if we did it all over again, we would have skipped the guided tour and instead opted for the audio guide. For starters, even though we arrived at 9:45, the first available English guided tour this day was a 12:15; we chose to head back to the city and return for the 2:15 tour. Of greater importance: even though the guided tours permit entry into some buildings not otherwise accessible, they were not all that historic or interesting. The tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable about all matters historical, and if you are into the many intricate details covering centuries of kings and conflict, the guided tour may be for you. As for me, I’ll go with the audio guide if I return for a second visit.

I ran up the snake-path from the old Bridge. It was a demanding start to my run to say the least. The philosopher's path has great view of old town of Heidelberg

Quaint little narrow streets off the main street, a bustling area of shops cafe's, restaurants and bars. Some beautiful architecture, buildings, church and cobbled streets. Students and tourists in abundance gives it a great atmosphere.

The old bridge is one of Heidelberg’s most famous marks!
What a beautiful and romantic bridge. No visit to Heidelberg is complete without strolling along this beautiful bridge!

Starting in 1890, the historic Heidelberg Mountain railways, one of the city's most popular attractions. is a two-section funicular railway. It runs all year round between Kornmarkt, about 113 meters above sea level, to Königstuhl, nearly 550 meters above sea level and the highest point in Heidelberg, providing impressive views of the city, the Neckar valley and the Rhine plain - right up to the Palatinate Wine Route. It could accommodate up to 50 passengers on each of its journeys. Since its renovation between 2003 and 2005, the Heidelberger Bergbahn is considered a striking combination of one of the country’s oldest and most modern funiculars mountain railway in Germany presenting quite different appearances. It is the longest mountain railway route in Germany - 1.5 km long. More than a million passengers use the traditional mountain railways and enjoy this attraction every year. Visitors are guaranteed a wonderful view of Heidelberg and the surrounding area. During our ride on it, we experienced Heidelberg and its charming surroundings from a very special perspective.

Use your imagination! What kind of power the pharmacist must have had at this time!

This is a lively town center with restaurants, shops, fountains and statues. It is a great place to stop and get your bearings when touring the town. It is basically in the middle of the old town. Heidelberg is a beautiful place to visit. The center has a bunch of tables to sit down at and eat. Be careful which table you sit at as that determines which restaurant you will dine at. Some of them are mediocre at best.

I suppose there are other places in the world where university students incarcerated for mostly petty crimes were permitted to express remarkable artistic creativity on the walls — and where that creativity is still possible to see. But there certainly cannot be many, and it is remarkable to see the results of these students' creativity right in front of you from floor to ceiling. This is an unusual if not unique attraction, and while some of the cathedrals and castles one might visit may sometimes blend somewhat in our memories over time, this will always stand out and be clearly remembered. Most worthwhile.

The Neckar is as cute as rivers come, close to the similarly romantic Mosel. So this area is ideal for a romantic, or just relaxing vacation.

Fantastic view of Heidelberg and the whole valley as it was a beautiful sunny day. It takes quite a time to get to the top on Funicular railway having to change half way up from a modern one to an older smaller one. We were fortunate that we didn't have to wait too long in between changing, but can imagine at the height of the tourist season that would be quite different. On the way down we got off at the Chateau stop and spent a couple of hours there and then took the train down afterwards to the station. Not a particularly cheap experience at €14 per person but we were not perturbed. You can get food and drinks at each stop on the line if you have the time and inclination to do so.

There is the option of getting to the top by foot haha! , car or bus which is cheaper of course than the railway.

A monumental church in the old town (est. ). Interesting, as churches go, in any case it is nice and quiet in side. You can also climb up 200 steps for spectacular views of the city (Hello there -- sexy dude! ( €2 donation)

You can feel the knowledge that is contained inside this building! Well reconstructed (they were still doing renovations), beautiful, immense and with nice details.

Jesuitekirche is a nice church located in the old town in Heidelberg. The Church is nicer than most, however it is nowhere near as stunning as the best in Europe. This is worth visiting if you're in the Old Town already.
