If like us, you enjoy walking while exploring, then Saint-Germain is a small but vibrant, fashionable area. We enjoyed strolling through the streets past upmarket boutiques, smart bistros and beautiful architecture. This was the area where the Paris literary and artistic set used to hang out in cafes. In the early 20th century, it attracted writers, painters, sculptors, musicians. If you were in the right spot at the right time, you might have had Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus or Pablo Picasso at the table next to you.
Although there are a handful of sights to see here (Delacroix Museum and the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés), we simply enjoyed it as a very pretty area through which to walk.

    PROS
    * Amazing striking and impressive domed structure
    * Solemn tomb of Napoleon

    CONS
    * It's a religious structure

    "I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I wanted to descend to the lower level and approach Napoleon's Tomb from ground level, as I had not done that in October 2019

I found the place solemn and eerie to me- the narrow catacomb walkways before entering the circular walkway around the catafalque.

    WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It was free as part of the Paris Museum Pass; I don't think that I would otherwise pay for it

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
    No- twice is enough

    ADVICE
    * Admire the church and its dome
    * Descend to the lower level to see the catafalque closer up

Brilliant repairs and renovations on this church. I was pleased to visit it again as so much has been cleaned and done. Lots of history being told in little alcoves throughout this beautiful basilica.

Recently spent some time in Paris and enjoyed visiting a handful of churches around the city including St. Germain des Pres along Blvd St. Germain. It is one of the oldest and most important churches in the city, well worth stopping by for a visit if planning to be in the area and interested in seeing old churches.

Historically, it seems there was a Roman temple originally on these grounds. There were several abbeys here from the 6th-century onward. Later a medieval church was constructed and heavily fashioned in Romanesque and early Gothic style around the 12th-century. Later additions remained primarily Gothic in style which you can see while viewing the exterior and interior of the church.

The blue ceiling fresco reminds of St. Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome. The choir frescos are very impressive as are the murals that line the upper walls of the nave. Some lovely stained-glass windows are on display as well. Much of what you see was added post French Revolution, visit Musee du Cluny to see original parts of the church which were protected and preserved over the years.

Not a very large cathedral - it is the soldiers' church, for the retired soldiers who live in the Invalides. Impressive display of military flags and banners. Like other displays in the Army Museum in the Invalides, there are explanations provided in English.

Located close to the beautiful Jardin des plantes, you'll find this hidden treasure.

Morocco?! Tunisia?!.... no,no you are in Paris!

Beautiful mosaics, woodcarving etc to admire! As well as fountains, gardens etc

Chill in busy Paris and enjoy a time out for 3 Euro pp.

Small, busy café/restaurant with typical oriental ambience and food.

There are so many beautiful churches in Paris. This almost impossible to fathom.
I've already reviewed quite a few here, hidden gems .
This is another one but it's impossible to visit them all.
So you'll just have to walk around and visit them as they come your way, like this one, right after having visitied Le Louvre.

We walked past at about 6.30 on a Friday evening after walking along the banks of the Seine. As we had an hour before dinner we decided to see if it was open, as it looked quite closed up.
Imagine our surprise to find not only was it open but there was a lively and unusual service going on, involving numerous people up at the altar wearing white cloaks pulled over their heads.
We stood at the very back of the church as a few people came in and joined the congregation.
We could see the wonderful stained glass around the altar.
Now, having read up on the interesting history of the church I will definitely try to visit the next time I am in Paris.

Tours are Monday Tuesday and Thursday starting 10 a.m. and other times throughout the day. Very interesting and impressive Synagogue, funded by the Rothchild family. I'm not clear why the Nazis didn't destroy it in world War 2, but it is completely intact. Possibly because it is on land donated by the French goverment back to Napoleon times. Our guide took our small group inside the Torah cabinet. A patio has iron designed by Gustave Eiffel. The informative tour is only 10 euros. It is almost as large as the main Synagogue in Budapest. I hope one day they have a proper gift shop and more visitors, as it is very beautiful and worthwhile.

We really enjoyed this church. It is a smaller, more intimate perspective of the past historical Catholic experience. It is an active church filled with votive candles (and the rich smell of burning wax) and a Perpetual Adoration side chapel. The stained glass windows were so rich looking. The colors are deeper and more rich looking than modern stained glass windows. And there were some unique scenes depicted in the stained glass, not just the same scenes you see over and over. Plus there’s a statue of St. Denis holding his disembodied head which is something you don’t see that often. Older kids and teens might think it’s cool, but discretion is needed, of course. Skip the lines at Sacre Coeur and come here instead!

This rather large and beautiful cathedral or basilica is squeezed in between buildings and trees. If you are in the vicinity, it worth a visit to admire the impressive architecture.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was placed under the arch of the Arc de Triomphe in 1920.
At exactly the same time, an unknown British soldier was also buried in Westminster. This was no coincidence. It was only two years after the end of WWI . So many had died that many bodies were never recovered and many others lay, buried in unmarked graves in foreign countries.
Both countries were still reeling from the loss of mostly young men and families were left with no body to bury or mourn. The tradition of setting aside of a single grave that would represent all the unknown dead was born. It would contain the body of one unknown soldier and would serve as a memorial to all those who had died and remained lost and unidentified.
The tomb is sombre and stark in in its simplicity.
A slab of granite is inscribed with the words ‘Ici repose un soldat français mort pour la Patrie, 1914–1918’ ("Here rests a French soldier who died for the Fatherland, 1914–1918”) and an eternal flame burns in their memory. It is ceremoniously rekindled every day at 6:30pm.
A bronze plaque was added after WWII.
Low black bollards with a chain fence keep people at a respectful distance but you can still walk up close enough to read the inscriptions and see to the tomb on both sides.

Beautiful stained glass with intricate details you just don't see today. Lovely interior with information. Audio guide is optional. The outside shows stunning architecture. It's a quick walk from other popular sites so make sure to stop in.

The current Cathedral was consecrated in 1886, and it became a cathedral in 1922.
A big church in Gothic Revival style, it has beautiful stained glass windows from 1893-1893. The tower is among the tallest in Paris (85 meters, 280 feet)
