We found great results, but some are outside Northumberland. Showing results in neighbouring cities.
Limit search to Northumberland.

A gem amongst small museums
This is one of the best museums we have visited.
Solway Aviation Museum Carlisle 23.2 km away

As with many small museums, you can get up close and personal with the aircraft (hint, hint to the RAF Museum....), so we got inside both a Vulcan B2 and a Canberra T4.
Outside there are numerous aircraft and, unlike some museums, you are actively encouraged to climb aboard some of them and sit in the pilot's seat!
Vindolanda Hexham

For 2 museums with such unique world-class artefacts and an expert guided tour, this was excellent value for money.
My wife and I have been to a lot of Roman museums in many nations but this was the best due to the neat interpretative displays and the range of perishable artifacts.
The Devil's Porridge Museum Eastriggs, UK 40.9 km away

This is one of the best war museums I have ever visited and visitors will learn so much in an interesting (and fun for some of the bits) way.
One of the best museums I have ever been.
Killhope Lead Mining Museum Cowshill 39.6 km away
#1 of 1 Museums in Cowshill
There is something for all ages, a mine tour, museum, video show, walk around the mine buildings and workings, a lovely little cafe and an amazing red squirrel hide.
Killhope Lead Mining museum made a great stopping-off point on the way back home to Scotland from my native north east, though I can heartily recommend it as a destination in itself.

Cumbria's Museum of Military Life Carlisle 33.1 km away

Some museums can be just a little too big... but this one was perfect in that you could comfortably visit each exhibit without time passing by too much.
I have been to army museums and war museums in Vietnam, Korea, Germany, and they present things in their own ways.
#2 of 6 Museums in Hexham
On a practical note it is definitely worth purchasing a combined ticket to visit both the Vindolanda site & the Roman Army museums, as this reduces the entrance fee & it gives you up to a year to visit both sites.
This and Vindolanda are the two best Roman museums we've visited - and we've been to Rome & Pompeii.

#1 of 1 Museums in Threlkeld
I have visited many museums and tourist attractions, Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum was unique in that it lacked the sterility and soulless feel of so many government funded museums.
The welcome is friendly, the Museum fascinating, the trip down the mine is excellent backed up by the Guides enthusiasm and knowledge, you have to wear lighted Pit Helmets to see.

Found this Heritage Museum very interesting with info on local railways telephone stories from bygone days, border reivers, photography, farming and aircraft etc. Managed to open safe and receved chocolates.
Despite being a fairly small museum, it's packed full of informative displays and is well laid out.
#3 of 6 Museums in Berwick-upon-Tweed
It was about 2 hours long and there was so much to see in the Town Hall , including a museum and the old gaol.
There is prisoners' graffiti still on the wall, and plenty of items to see - it has been turned into a mini-museum.

I was a little apprehensive upon visiting the Seven Stories museum as even though I had read a range of positive reviews, I can be an extremely harsh critic.

Hub Heritage & Transport Museum Alston 32.5 km away

I'd happily go back many a time over the coming years, many other museums are bigger but rarely feel as good a value for money.
The museum contains a collection of old cars, motor bikes and bicycles as well an amazing assortment of old photos, and items from last century (and earlier !)
