Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Lovely place, very busy, water is warm and calm. Lots of parking, public toilets, disabled access. Supermarkets and individual shops full of Greek made goods. One of the first cafes is Mermaid, the best 100% Arabica coffee, so good we had two! Previously we sat at another and had to leave the cup of something pretending to be cappuchino (shudder). Arrive early if you don't like crowds. Can rocommend the little hairdressing salon by the old tree, had a very good haircut. Also bought a couple of lovely Crete manufactured linen dresses from Fashion Christina, lovely owners.

The pittoresque beach with red sand and a small bar. When we were on the beach there was not sunbeds. Sometimes local goats visit rocks around the beach and watch visitors. A path to the beach leads from Matala village, 30 minutes about.

If you want to lie around on a beach this is not the place - the beach itself is small and the beds etc are very busy - but as a resort this is excellent - beautiful setting, lots of tavernas and shops. Sea is crystal clear and there is some decent snorkelling. The bay is sheltered and would be perfect for paddle boarding if you could be bothered!

Its a nice sandy beach, but there are big waves and water can be deep not far from the coast. Water is mostly clean, there is only seagrass. It's located not far from Heraklion city center, it's a 15 minutes drive by bus. There aren't many tourists, mostly locals visit this beach, which is nice. Sunset is beautiful to watch on this beach.

We were staying in Kalamaki. On the beach there. You could walk to the Nudist part of beach. Just stand facing the sea turn left and walk about one mile or so. Walking on beach is hard going as very soft sand even close to water. Were it’s usually harder packed. We drove around using google maps to Konami’s beach by the Self service Imbis Maria. There’s a car park there. Roads are a bit rough by quite manageable. Walk 50yds to beach turn right and about 100yds walk to Nudist part of beach. The tide go out very little here so easy access. Although sand is rough and quite pebbles close to surf with some larger pebbley in the wash. But all in all. Very good. We have traveled to Nudist beaches all over Europe, and this is one of the nicest. We tried to get to Red beach near Matala. But gave up at car park. As it’s a goat track over a mountain.

Ligaria beach is not far from Heraklio. It is in a protected cove and the water is crystal clear. Well worth the drive. Only potential issue is it is a rocky beach with slippery rocks to get into water.

We only chanced upon this beach when we past it on the main road, wish we had found it sooner as it was really nice. We used the beach chairs next to Margaritari restaurant and never had to pay for them all day!!
It can get a bit windy and the sea gets rough but the guards just make sure you don't swim out too far.

As a local who lives in heraklion I have to say that many reviews are false or biased. There are a few beaches in analipsi and kato gouves. Some are good, some are not so good. But there are definately a few good sandy beaches. There are also beaches in hersonisos. The place is beautiful. A lot of locals tend to buy second houses in the area. Analipsi and kato gouves are next to each other and they are more as a tourist resort as they are seaside. Also, they are a lot more quieter than Hersonisos, located a few km away. More likely for families. If you want to see traditional villages you should visit Ano Hersonissos (the village of Hersonissos), piskopiano, koutouloufari, mohos. If you want isolation, beautiful sea views and nature you should stay in Agriana/Prinolagkado. Agriana is located in the middle of analipsi and hersonisos and it is away from all the hustle and bustle. You can always visit beaches in analipsi, kato gouves, hersonisos, anisaras from there as it is 2-3 km away. You definitely need a car if you stay there. You could also visit Malia and Stalida. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda is about 40km away, worth visiting. But if you want pristine white beaches and calmness without crowds and you are in for an adventure (as it is far away) you should visit xerocambos (Lefki). I strongly recommend xerocambos if you don't want a tourist resort, there are only a few taverns - cafes and a few apartment rentals. But the beaches are incredible. There is mazida, the big central beach, a smaller one, the clay beach, krinakia beach, alatsolimni etc. North of xerocambos there are a few traditional villages such as lithines, ziros and xandras. And close by is the famous Vai. A lot of incredible places. You could visit Sitia or ierapetra and makris gialos. Heraklion and Lasithi have such a vast variety of options. You could also visit the beautiful chania and rethymno but I feel that heraklion and lasithi are so underatted.

Beautiful location in a little bay.
If you plan to visit make sure you have your water shoes at the ready. It is very slippery getting into the sea and it’s very rocky/stoney. If the tide is strong, which it was every time we visited then you will more than likely fall over as you are getting in. Just let the tide take you, it’s much easier that way.

Water is very clear and good for snorkelling. Lots of little fish to see.

The Sun Beds are very close together and cost €5 per bed for the day. Hours of 10am-5pm.

This is a must visit place. There’s lots of water sports that can be done as well.

Visited this natural gem 10 days ago, with a couple of friends. It's an isolated beach and gorge of extraterrestrial natural beauty. Be careful, as the road is rocky and dusty, no signal on the road, the beach or the gorge-maybe a good opportunity for some detox from technology and more relaxation. There is a lovely canteen called "Kuna Muta" at the end of the road and the beginning of the trail, where you can get drinks and something to eat-the owners are very lovely and helpful. 100% recommended for those who prefer wild landscape beauty, quiet places and clean waters.
