I am giving this a 4-star rating, because I consider it a very good gallery, compared to others its size. British Columbia does not have any art galleries to compare with Quebec, Ontario, or even Alberta, which is strange. Perhaps the Vancouver Art Gallery's recent fundraising will result in a much more impressive gallery in BC's biggest city. The AGGV is relatively small, with no attempt to be encyclopedic, but it hosts good temporary exhibitions, and has a small permanent collection on view. Currently (December, 2021), it has a good exhibition of BC's most famous painter, Emily Carr ("Seeing and Being Seen"), and some other artists inspired by her. My favourite exhibit was an adorable porcelain model of her house by Valerie Pugh. There is a second exhibition: "The Story of Blue and White [porcelain]" (Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Dutch). Finally, the selection of art available for rental or purchase is well worth viewing. BTW, the gallery is open until 9:00 pm on Thursday evenings, and only a donation is expected after 5:00 pm.
