I did a solo road trip and hit 10 of the National Parks. This hike was my favorite, it’s a must while in Glacier. It’s 10.6 miles round trip, great elevation gains and breathtaking views the entire way!! It took me just under 4 hours to complete it. I didn’t pass too many people on my way up, but did on my way back. When I got back to the parking lot it was packed so I recommend going early

We didn't stay at the lodge because IMHO it's not worth the price. (Like many of the National Park lodging places it's outdated, small with no amenities - except location). We DID take the boat tour, which is well worth it - and you don't have to stay at the lodge to do it (but allow plenty of time to get there.) You can also just stop at the lodge (driving or on Red Bus) and just enjoy it for a while and then travel on.

We drove up on one of the last days of September that you could get through before the first snow closed the Road to the Sun! Unfortunately it was very busy and we had to drive around the parking lot with about 20 other cars to wait for a parking spot!
The visitor’s center was closed as well as the bathrooms!
We walked around the paths wanting to see the Big Horn Sheep or the Mountain Goats but they were not there. There are gorgeous views in several directions so we enjoy them on a beautiful sunny day.

You need to plan before you go.... The boat ride on Lake McDonald was incredible. I also opted to hike the "Highline Trail" and tour the Going to the Sun Road with a third party vendor, and those slots fill up fast. If you are driving, the "going to the Sun" Road is a must do. There are many stops along the road to enjoy, wildlife, waterfalls, river views, and lakes.
If you are a hiker, there are tons of options from very short hikes with kids, to strenuous hikes for people in good condition. Do a little research on options before you go.

Fantastic short hike. We parked at the Avalanche Creek Picnic Area and despite it being off-season it was still busy (before 9am) so get there early for parking. The trail starts at Trail of the Cedars (a short flat loop) before splitting off and heading up hill. It’s a moderate walk but doable by anyone of reasonable fitness. We’re in our 50s and in good shape. Along the way we saw families with young children and older folk with sticks, and everyone in between, so it’s definitely accessible for most. The trail started with rapids and waterfalls, then moved up into some forest with amazing green mossy ground, before arriving at Avalanche Lake. On a clear blue sky day, it was just breathtaking. On the return leg, we did the Trail of the Cedars loop, which was an easy but interesting path. All up we were on the move for about 3 hours.

Beautiful lake with several stops to enjoy a picnic. Didn’t realize when we saw Wild Goose Island that the area was used in films, including the opening scene of The Shining. Would love to take a boat tour sometime.

Perhaps the most scenic hike in North America. Stunning panoramic scenery the entire hike that doesn’t even look real. The lake is beautiful - surrounded by thousand foot cliffs - and yes, it had icebergs in it. I would highly recommend hiring a Glacier Park guide. We used Lillian and she was highly informative and entertaining.

To get to these falls, you first hike to St. Mary’s falls. Gorgeous hike, just one gorgeous view after another! The hike was a little longer than I was used to, but I’m glad I went to the end!

Boat ride was excellent. Jasmine was our guide and was very humorous and informative. Ride was smooth despite a windy day. Get there early as we had a reservation, but they give away seats 10 minutes before leaving (we were about 8 minutes early). It ended up working out anyway, but was news to us after booking through Amtrak. We also did the hike to the point and falls which were fairly easy compared to others we did in glacier.

We love this lake!!! It is easy to get to if you have an SUV (through gravel road). But once you get there, the lake is just right there! You can walk around the lake or just sit enjoy the quietness. The water is sooo clean. We went at the end of August and had no problem finding a parking space. However, we heard friends going in early Aug and couldn't find parking.

I was shocked how beautiful this waterfall is. It is a must do if you are in the area. It comes straight out of the mountain at low flow, creating a beautiful waterfall. It was a short, easy hike. Most of the trail is paved with blacktop.

Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park are two amazing national parks that I get an opportunity to visit once a year on average while camping near the border. I encourage everyone to at least make one visit in your lifetime, as there is nothing like it!
