Wineries & Vineyards
Tenuta Vandelli was born in 2011 on the foundations of the farm Vandelli that about since 1960 has been dealing with viticulture in the territory of San Michele dei Mucchietti in the hills of the province of Modena, a few kilometers south of Sassuolo on the right bank of the river Secchia. Thanks to the tenacity and passion for the Vine and the experience gained over the last 50 years by Valter Vandelli, who, with the support of his family, has decided to undertake this project which sets itself the maintenance and enhancement of a great heritage of quality as a goal, consisting of about ten hectares of Vineyards planted with typical grape varieties in the area around Modena: Lambrusco Grasparossa of Castelvetro, Lambrusco Salamino of Santa Croce, Ancelotta, Malbo Gentile, Spergola and Pignoletto. The family, the location and the quality are the main points that inspire our daily work and which translate into care and reverential attention to the vineyard, pruning systems aimed at low yields, manual grape harvest, winemaking and sparkling wine systems up to dateness of the wine-making technique, care and research to packaging of our bottles.Vandelli estate has its roots in a hundred years old history, involving the noblest past of Sassuolo and the area that once belonged to the noble family of Este. Lords of Modena and Ferrara. A story where the word “rooted” is of particular value because these vineyards, of the winery Vandelli, are really the protagonists. Space and well ordered rows situated in the area of San Michele dei Mucchietti known by the name of “the Bacino”. In toponymy, the history of these lands: it was located right here The Ducal Wood Basin, a triangular shape Basin of 22.000 square meters, destined to the stacking of the wood from the rich woods of the Abetina Reale. An impressive work, a basin surrounded by channels used for the transport of wood and of long walls of containment. Used throughout the eighteenth century, the basin saw the arrival of the timber disappear with the beginning of the nineteenth century, substituted little by little by the coal transported by train. But that land, however, from the wood of our Apennines had absorbed precious substances, that make these slimy grounds, rich and above all unique. A historical value but first of all an incomparable nutritional value.Valter Vandelli took care of these vineyards with reverential attention over the past 50 years.Well aware of the value of their lands and grateful for the work of Walter and Lydia, the sons William, Massimo and Ermanna have decided to emphasize the quality of these vineyards, producing wines at the height of their history.Wines of tradition: “I Vini del Bacino” (Wines of the Basin): Lambrusco of Castelvetro Grasparossa DOP, Extra Dry Sparkling Rosé Lambrusco of Castelvetro Grasparossa DOP, Spergola Colli of Scandiano and Canossa DOC that are just waiting for your “judgment.”

Before it was a castle built in 1458 after Francis I D’Este modified the castle into a Ducal Palace in 1609.
I absolutely recommend to visit Fish Farm/ Peschiera Delizia Ducale.

We approached the Peschiera Ducale from the backside seeing the eagle symbol from the street. We walked around the backside to ward the park grounds and came upon this mysterious magnificent ruin of a structure before reaching the palace. One could only imagine what the pools, the stairs and art when this was a living space.

A few miles away from the town of Sassuolo and half a mile from the actual village of Montegibbio you can find this ancient castle hidden among the high trees on the top of a hill. The castle itself is not visitable (apart from a few guided tours a year). In one of the buildings there is the Acetaia Comunale (where the local balsamic vinegar is produced). There is a little church and a tower as well. You can rent the castle court for celebrations and special occasions. There is a park which sorrounds the castle on the hilltop (Parco Ducale) where the panaorama is great and you can pick delicious wild blackberries in the summer. The place is ideal for families with little children as there is a playground as well.

Lovely little beautiful town with lots of charm and character, the parks are quiet and clean great for a love picnic. The 670 board from Moderna was on time and very clean however was not told at the bus station when we enquired about the departure times the the bus back from Sassuolo was on fact a train, this was not bad because it was at a cheaper fare and was quicker.
