What travellers are saying
- vvlim333Taipei, Taiwan474 contributionsThis is one of the most charming public libraries in Japan. It is a two storey building, and there are two spots for tourists to take photograph in the library, one on each floor.
If you come to Takeo, do spend an afternoon to this library. It is a great place to relax in here, with your favorite Starbucks drink while reading the magazines/books in the library.Written 9 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kimitaka STaichung, Taiwan14,141 contributionsMifuneyama Rakuen is a kind of natural park on the foot of Mt. Mifune. It is popular for azalea in spring and red leaves in autumn. As I went there, it was too early for red leaves. But just for this reason, there is only few visitors, and I could enjoy an excellent walking. There is also an event of illumination. But I didn’t see it.Written 17 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Kimitaka STaichung, Taiwan14,141 contributionsIt is about 15 minutes’ walk from JR Takeo station. From Takeo hot spring, it is about the same distance. The highlight of this shrine is 3000 years’ camphor tree. It is really remarkable. As I visited the shrine, hydrangeas were beautifully blooming.Written 18 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jason43v3rSingapore33 contributionsIf you dont understand Japanese, dont bother to consider putting this in the itinerary. This place is more suitable for kids and locals.Written 8 December 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kimitaka STaichung, Taiwan14,141 contributionsMifuneyama is, beside hot spring, a symbol of Takeo. Its rocky summit can be seen from many places in the city. I tried to climb it and entered Mifuneyama Rakuen. However, the way to the summit is closed on the halfway. I still enjoyed a wonderful view of the mountain.Written 17 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tomizuta1953Funabashi, Japan1,226 contributionsI visited this place in November 2021 at a time the fourth wave of COVID 19 was rapidly subsiding. I had surfed the internet to find that there was a guided tour early in the morning. The Romon is the entrance gate to the public bath of Takeo Onsen open to all designed by Kingo Tatsuno, the architect that designed Tokyo Station among many other famous buildings. The Romon was completed in 1915. I asked about the tour at the admission office. The ticket was 450 yen per person. The admission staff guided us to the bottom of the gate. I had thought it was a guided tour, but he told us that we were free to explore the upper floor of the gate, adding that our ticket was inclusive of a bath at the public bath. We went up the narrow stairs to the second floor. There was a display of a miniature replica of the buildings with some drawings in the middle, and an elderly volunteer guide wearing a yellow coat was guiding another visitor. The guide gave us a lot of information. It was apparent that he had a lot of pride for Saga. Kingo Tatsuno was born in Saga, and a local entrepreneur had asked the famous architect to design a new building for Takeo Onsen. Tatsuno initially declined, as he was in the middle of the Tokyo Station construction, but eventually accepted. His original design was a triple gate of which only one was finally completed. Construction was undertaken by the current major construction company Shimizu Corporation. Of the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs, eight reliefs can be seen at Tokyo Station, and the remaining four can be found here, evidencing Kingo’s two contemporaneous works. We left the guide and the Romon and went across the car park to the Shinkan (new building), constructed at the same time as the Romon, and by the same architect/constructor team. It is called the new building as the main building (honkan) which is still in use was constructed in 1876 shortly after the Meiji Restoration. The entire Romon, honkan and shinkan site was a honjin (lodging place for feudal lords on their trips to and from Edo) on the Nagasaki Kaidou. Based on such history, the Shinkan was formerly used as a recreational staying place for the military. It went into disrepair after its use as a public bath was discontinued in 1973, but refurbished in 2003. It was designated as an important national cultural property in 2005 and currently serves as a museum of Takeo Onsen (admission free). It didn’t take long to view the ladies and mens' baths as well as the grander first class and three private mens' baths most likely for higher ranking military staff and wealthy people. It was an interesting visit to one of the oldest resort facilities in Japan.Written 29 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Seemingly it is managed by a private organization, and beside the garden there is also a museum. This time I just visited the garden. I saw the picture with beautiful azaleas, but unfortunately it was not the season of flowers. However, there are several attractions such as small waterfalls, the reconstruction of Yoshinogari ruins’ tower etc. So, it is anyway worth visiting.Written 16 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GGHollidayHong Kong, China5,280 contributionsIt was part of a souvenir shop with exhibition corner and cafeteria. I could not see a proper counter for tourist information, only a desk with local maps and leaflets on highlights around the area. Takeo onsen wasn't a big tourist spot anyway, so a self-serve counter would probably be adequate.Written 19 October 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
