Our Italian friends recommended Venosa as an interesting stop on our drive from Matera back to Rome. On their advice we hired a local guide, which was key. The town center, home to the famous Roman poet Horace and, at its time, an important seat of power, was enjoyable. But the fascinating parts of the tour were the uncompleted basilica... More

Venosa was home to one of the most famous roman poets, Quinto Oratio Flacco. The little town is disseminated with quotations from some of his most important works. It's a lovely place, its streets paved with marble stones, a huge castle that welcomes you upon arrival. An aoutstanding archeological park, hebrew catacumbs next to christian ones. Layers of history...

No visit to Basilicata is complete without Venosa. It's a fascinating little town. The archeological area and the Church of the Incompiuta are amazing. A woman from Minutiello Tours stepped in and gave us a free tour of the house of Horace - very professional!

Venosa is a beautiful town to walk around. The castle in the main square was built in 1470 (the deep moat now a lush lawn) and the shops in the square are fronted by a beautiful covered arched walkway (the corner cafe makes good coffee). We loved wandering along the beautiful narrow cobbled streets watching people go about their business,... More

There is a little bit of everything in town: 2000 years old tombs, a castle, a beautiful Cathedral rich of symbolic signs. The city is has a millenary culture of wine too.

If you have an interest in the Templar Knights then Venosa is a must for you. Venosa is off the main highways and an easy drive in just over an hour from Potenza and the scenery getting there is beautiful with the vines and olive trees all around. This is a major producer of wine and olive oil and there... More
