Description:

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Take your time with this garden ... and use a guide "Sam". You will learn about all kinds of insects as well as the butterflies. A phone/camera in slo-mo mode is key. Lots and lots of butterflies ... you feel like you are intruding on their world. The Blue butterflies and the Monarch's are awesome.

This butterfly garden, a not for profit whose proceeds support a local library, looks unassuming but there is a lot to see and do here, particularly if you take the guided tour. Sam, the volunteer guide running the tour when I arrived, graciously and seamlessly integrated latecomers to our tour, which started with some education about local insects. We then... More

The Monteverde Jardin de Mariposas is much better than that of the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We had an excellent tour led by Sam who was a font of knowledge. You'll see hundreds of gorgeous and healthy butterflies.

This was a bit more of a hike than I expected, but on the walk in I heard and saw some Capuchin monkeys. The garden consists of a number of netted or greenhouse like structures each filled with butterflies of different areas of the country. My guide was a delight and I learned a lot while enjoying the sight of... More

We were taken round by Sam who was a walking encyclopaedia on the butterflies- so knowledgeable! We learnt a lot and it was well worth it!

We were driving around and saw the sign so we went looking for the place. Lots of beautiful live butterflies and our guide was very knowledgeable about the butterflies. Then we got to the insects! Most are live and many you can actually hold which was fun and a little creepy in a good way! A good way to spend... More

Very easy place to find, Bath rooms are very clean as was the whole place, walk thru the door and it opens up to a nice waiting area where you'll find a very friendly and knowledgeable staff, all speak English, Spanish and several other Languages, once you get assigned to a guide you walk thru several different netted areas where... I had the pleasure of visiting this butterfly garden while recently making a trip to Monteverde in Costa Rica. The owner gave our tour group a wonderful experience of first showing us and educating us on a variety of insects, a tarantula, a scorpion, and other wildlife indigenous to the area. She was really entertaining and funny! She had our... More

While I can't guarantee a butterfly will land on YOU if you go to visit the Butterfly garden, you will thoroughly enjoy all you will learn. Our guide, Jordan, was very knowledgeable and really good with people. First we visited the insect house. While I originally thought I wouldn't be interested in anything but the butterflies, Jordan made it VERY... More

I read the reviews on TripAdvisor before deciding on this attraction. Having now visited it, I am perplexed by the positive statements. We saw very few butterflies, and our guide did not seem particularly knowledgeable about butterflies or anything related to them. She did seem to love insects at least. We were all greatly disappointed.
