About
A cliff top coastal walk, the Bondi to Coogee walk extends for six km in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The walk features stunning views, beaches, parks, cliffs, bays and rock pools. The beaches and parks offer a place to rest, swim or a chance to eat at one of the cafes, hotels, restaurants or takeaways. All beaches offer picnic shelters, electric barbecues, play areas, kiosks, toilets and change-rooms. The walk is not difficult, there are medium gradient paths and several staircases with occasional seating. It takes about two hours to complete the Bondi to Coogee Beach section of the walk and another hour and a half if you choose to continue to Maroubra.

Top ways to experience Bondi to Coogee Walk
The area
Neighbourhood: Coogee
Very accessible by public transport, Coogee is the smaller, friendlier, more intimate version of Bondi Beach. Coogee is the only beach in the Eastern suburbs that does not have big waves, making it an excellent family beach. The Coogee Bay Hotel, located right across the beach, has one of the biggest beer gardens in Australia and plenty of entertainment every night of the week. Be on the lookout for celebrity footballers! A little further south is Wylie’s Baths, offering sweeping 180 degree views over the Pacific Ocean, and it is perfect for a swim or a few laps. Plenty of dining choices surround the beach, including the famous fish and chips.

- YY_XieSingapore, Singapore159 contributionsHighlight of visit to sydneyThis was the highlight of my visit to Sydney. The views become less interesting after Waverly Cemetery, so if you're looking to shorten the hike, this would be a good point to stop. Bronte beach was particularly nice spot for suntanning and a refreshing dip before continuing the hike. There's a small lagoon at the southern end that's sheltered from the waves, and it's quieter than Bondi beach (i.e. no screaming teenagers).Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 7 December 2022
- OldjackGreater Melbourne, Australia27,762 contributionsViews In The SunThe 6 km walk between Coogee and Bondi is a great way to see parts of Sydney and get some exercise. On a good day, you cannot beat the views and a must do in Sydney. There are good bus services to both Coogee and Bondi from Circular Quay and Central.Visited December 2022Written 22 December 2022
- C79-Family25 contributionsCoogee to Bondi WalkWhat a great walk - we had a driver take us to Coogee Beach and then pick us up at Bondi Beach. We took 3.5 hours which allowed time to stop and enjoy different views along the way. Not a hard walk - it was very sunny, so would recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen. It was a beautiful walk with a variety of things to see.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023
- EMT_ChrisSouthold, New York874 contributionsA Must!OMG! We picked a cooler day to take on this +/- 6K walk. So many chances to stop along the way from just taking in the sites to grabbing a coffee or taking a dip in the ocean or baths. We took the A350 bus from Coogee to Bondi Junction and walked the 20 minutes to start. Can also choose to take another bus to beach. The beach was bustling with sunbathers and surfers. The baths were filled with lap swimmers and children wading in and out. The route is to be taken at your own pace, some run some walk. We strolled and stopped as needed. Some stairs and ramps, but all are worth it when you see the breathtaking water views and rock formations. Plenty of spots to dive, snorkel, swim or sunbathe. If you can, do it, no regrets! I had a bad knee but was still able to go up and down stairs that you hit on the way. Just did Bondi to Bronte and then back and that was enough and then back at Bondi for lunch.Visited February 2023Written 12 February 2023

The issue is it is terrible busy especially on weekends. Take swimmers if you can, so many amazing places to stop and swim.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 March 2023
- Mo CHouston, Texas366 contributionsTake this walk!We walked Coogee to Bondi on a very windy day. The water was amazing and the views were stunning. It's about 6-7 km and it's a pretty easy, paved walk. We passed the famous Icebergs Restaurant. Great photo opportunities along the way.Visited March 2023Written 24 March 2023
- goblin54Plymouth, United Kingdom243 contributionsGood but not the bestDid the walk from Coogee to Bondi in just over 2 hours with stop for coffee at Clovelly. The walk isn’t long (6km) but there is a constant rise or fall on the path with lots of steps & very little flat sections. The walk was good, although we’ve enjoyed a lot nicer, more dramatic coastal walks in Britain. Also be aware there are no taxi ranks in Bondi, so you will need to phone/book online for a taxi to return to Coogee or the CBD.Visited April 2023Written 4 April 2023

Amazing walk took longer than recommended time, so much to see, we were fortunate that sculpture by the sea was on. The views and beaches are magnificent so many people and it was a Tuesday weekend would be too busy

My teenage daughter and me tracked the Bondi to Coogee walk in an early winter when it was not too chilly. Getting to Bondi from our CBD Airbnb was quite easy using the bus. We decided to walk from Bondi since it would mean the sun would be on our back all the way to Coogee.
The whole walk was generally easy but may be challenging to some with the need to climb the stairs in certain spots. However, since you can walk at your own pace and there are many lookouts with outstanding views to stop by, I think the walk would suit (healthy) people of all ages. Another plus is that the walk is located within the city itself, so you do not need to spend time getting to and fro.
Highly recommended for everyone visiting Sydney.

On our first day in Coogee we took this walk in reverse. It was amazing and well kept. The trail was mostly paved or elevated. The views along the cliffs and at the beaches were exceptional. Highly recommend but do early to avoid crowds in Bondi.

Highly recommended - we caught a tram from Central Station in Sydney which went directly to Bondi junction - then caught a bus to the start of the walk at Bondi Beach. The walk was magnificent and very picturesque. A definite must do. Some lovely bars with great views at Bondi Beach if you fancy topping off your day with a cocktail.

Amazing, easy walk, with beautiful views. No steep climbs, you can do it leisurely, stopping at bays and beaches along the way. You will see interesting rock formations and cliffs along the way. There is a nice cafe on Clovelly Beach. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. It takes up to 2 hours. When you get to Coggee you can catch a bus to Bondi.

We did this walk on a beautiful sunny day on the weekend. Nice on a Sunny day but not the weekend- too busy !!
Lots of places to stop and rest if need be, rocks, walls, seats etc. There are also plenty of water fountains along the way.
There isn’t a lot of distance between the beaches and actually found it to be a easy walk and could have easily carried onto Coogee if I had willing partner.
When we got to Bronte Beach we carried on up the hill to Waverley Cemetery. I had a walk around reading the old headstones while taking in the most beautiful view of any cemetery I have been to. What a great resting place.
Great looking old statues and plots.
If I did it again, I would do it on a weekday and take my togs for a swim.

My wife and I take this walk whenever we visit our daughter in Sydney. The views are stunning , such a pleasure just to sit at various places along the way and drink it all in.The walk has its ups and downs but overall not too taxing. We especially love stopping at Brontë Beach to take a break and swim in the rockpool.

Hello! I am planning to this on a sunday. Is it easier to start at Coogee or Bondi? Only doing the walk one way.
Note: I want to also check out the Bondi Markets! any tips are appreciated!

We started on Coogee upon the recommendation of our concierge. It’s the same path both ways. Yes there is elevation change but there are stairs and railings where steep. We wore tennis shoes but many locals are in flip flops. Path is easy to follow (just follow the people). Remember to walk on the left!!! There are plenty of filtered water stations to refill your water bottle and rest rooms as well.
I think Bondi markets are only on Sunday. If you end there you won’t have to carry any packages with you.
Enjoy. It is FABULOUS

Hoi Nynke,
Hartelijk dank in ieder geval groetjes Henk Ruitenberg

Hello! I'm visiting in early May, with a 14 month old and husband for the first time.
We have a travel stroller which is 6.5kg, wondering if it's wise to bring it along with us or to just use a baby carrier instead.
I'm a bit worried about the stairs, are they very steep? If we do find it very challenging to complete the route, can we exit anywhere and take a bus back to Hyde Park area?
Also, what time of the day would be good for a visit?
Are there any other coastal walks that are easier but still offer great views?
Thanks so much in advance for answering my question!

It is a long walk so 2 hours sounds about right for one way but can go faster depending on your fitness level

I'm the typical arachnophobe and keep hearing stories about the spiders. Are there spiders around here or places you can suggest to avoid seeing the huntsmen, etc?
Sarah C
Sydney, Australia44 contributions
Living in Sydney you will hear about spider stories. If you park your car under Bush land there is potential for spiders to make their way into your car however in my 20 odd years driving I have only encountered one spider. On the walk there are likely to be spiders hidden in the rock face or in bushes however they do not generally wander around all over the place and especially where there is a lot of foot traffic. Do not fear the spiders, you are likely to see none unless you go for a spider hunt

We are staying in central Sydney hotel and want to do the walk. What is the easiest public transport route to get to Bondi or Coogee to start the walk and then get back to central Sydney via public transport ?

The bus is the easiest, catch it from
Circular Quay, goes every couple of minutes , takes about 40 minutes to Bondi Beach . To get back buses are parked along Coogee beach main rd, nice and easy , costs about $4 each way using Opal card. You buy this from the bus/train station abd can top it up easily 👌
