We went to this place after a long time, it looks much cleaner than earlier days. This is a Buddist temple where you find lots of local pilgrims visit in groups. If you are a tourist please be properly dressed and have a camera with lots of storage capacity. This temple has a tunnel down the main statue with thousands... More

This is a famous religious place among Buddhists in Sri Lanka. There is a big statue of Buddha and you can go to the top of the statue. And there are nice frescoes here.

We visited the temple without expecting much and we were very surprised with what we saw. More than 7000 paintings with the history of Buddha and Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Beautiful landscape, and a beautiful big Buddha on the front. It's worth seeing, specially if you can have a Buddhist student to show you around.

We can highly recommend to visit this temple. It is not only the home for the highest Buddha in Sri Lanka, it is also about the history of Buddhism that is presented like comics on the walls.

It's great to wander through the painted tunnels below the tempel, if it's only to mount up the stairs and see a gigantic buddha statue. Buy some flowers just before you enter to leave at one of the many alters, donate some money to help restore the many paintings and if you want to learn something, the guy that showed... More

I visited this temple after a very long time. My last visit was in somewhere 1961 or 1962 when I was a 7 - or 8 year old, I visited this temple with my parents. Anyway as I can remember then the temple was very new, There wasn't a cover over the huge buddha statue. The underground shrine room paintings... More
