The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.

There will be a busy street leading to famous Temple/Shrines.. This historic Omotesando leads to the main gate of one of Japan’s World Heritage Site - Byodoin Temple. It is located just a 10-minute walk from JR Uji Station and if one approaches from Keihan Uji Line it is immediately across the Uji Bridge.
As Uji is famous for, its UJI Tea, one would see the long-established Uji tea shops! Plenty of stores selling unique local products of Uji and souvenir shops. There are also many restaurants and cafes dishing out a menu full of tea-based dishes from tea dumplings, matcha sweets, matcha ramen and gyoza, and even tea soba noodles. We even tried the tea-based ice cream, interesting & nice indeed.
It was hot July summer when we were there and the crowd was not aa strong as we expected on a Saturday morning. Probably everyone tried to take shade or walked faster to get to the Temple. Still it was an interesting street to explore

It is a short and small street to Byodoin temple.
There are many famous and historical tea shops on both side of the street .
Walking down this street, everyone can feel the smell of roast of green tea leaves called Houjitya tea.
It is smokey but terrific !

Do not forget to walk on this street , never ride on a cab without breathing outdoor air coming to famous Byodoin temple !

Sorry for my poor English .

The street is located just beside the Uji River. From Uji JR Station, turn left and walk along the main road (about 500 meters) until you see the Uji River, the street will be on your right. There are cafe and tea shops along the street, from ice cream, cake, soba etc. It is a nice relaxing street to hang out. Just walk until the end of the street and you can see a path leading to Uji river.
However, if you plan to combine your Uji trip with Nara, just make sure you arrive before 4pm because most of the shops will be closed at 5pm.

The street is full with tea shops, sweet shops, noodle restaurants, and ice cream shops. It is a very pleasant road, you can take a leisurely walk looking at the stores with the smell of tea being roasted keeping you company. It was a very nice smell :))

Try the green tea mochi, green tea soft serve, and if you want to buy tea, better buy it here as it's few grades cheaper. I scolded myself for not buying it here and instead wait until I got to Osaka to buy it.

Tea shops and restaurants related to matcha are abundant here. We tried the matcha ice cream which tasted great. Bought some matcha to bake cakes too.

The street is the main street that leads to Byodoin. A lot of shops are along the street. Above all, Uji is the famous place for Japanese tea. I found a lot of tea shops and green tea ice cream shops there. Free English maps are provided at Uji station. The map tells the way to Byodoin through the street.

Byodoin Omotesando at Uji was famous for green tea. There were many tea houses along the street and visitors would not miss their chance to have tea tasting and matcha ice-cream experience there. Recommended.

A street with almost all uji matcha products of all brands there, a bit touristy but definitely a full collection of uji tea and matcha products! I personally prefer the small stores selling tea accessories like tea pot and cup! Japanese craftsmanship always amaze people!

If you're into green tea, particularly the Matcha variety, this Green Tea shopping street is for you. There are endless varieties and qualities of green tea and matcha powder and all manner of foodstuffs and sets made from green tea. You will need however to read or speak some Japanese to have a meaningful conversation with the shop assistants.

The matcha street in Uji just parallel to Uji River was famous for the many tea houses and shops where you could find your own type of green tea at your own taste according to your own budget. Apart from tea leaves, there were other tea products, like green tea ice cream etc. were also visitors target as well. So come here to have a taste of green tea product when you visit Nara again.
