Top ways to experience Prefectural Uji Park and nearby attractions
The area
Neighbourhood: Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.

The Park is located along the Uji river and can be reached at a walking distance of about 25 minutes from the JR Uji station.
The park is very well maintained with good landscape. The park is connected by few wooden bridges with the surrounding locality and is a place that is highly recommended for a visit during the spring and autumn seasons, if visiting Uji.

The public park by Uji riverside was quite open but relaxed and people could stroll along or sit down to have views along the river. During our visit there by late Nov, it was cool and windy, thus not much visitor go there as compared with that during spring time when sakura blooms around the park.

Uji Park along the river was a good place for strolling by travelers. There were beautiful sakura trees around while birds were found flying in the air. Red colored bridges were there connecting pathways on both sides of the river. Visitors would find the place very relaxed after the day tour. Recommend to try a taste of the Uji tea and ice cream in one of the restaurants or tea houses around.

The river is right by the park and I found the area relaxing. I got to eat my bento (sat on one of the benches) and just listened to the sound of the swiftly moving water.
From the bridge, I also enjoyed the view of the green carpeted mountains (green forest and in autumn the brightly colored leaves).
When you get off the bridge on the opposite side from the park, there is a statue of a legendary couple that was mentioned in a very famous book that was written many years ago. There is also an inscription of (if memory serves me right) the infamous tale of Genji.

A large and void footpath alongside the Uji river, beautiful view of blossoms and the forest hills of the prefecture.
You could find groups of Japanese ladies gathering around performing songs or folks; bike riders taking a break on the ground after their long dive up the mountain; young couples enjoying their romance under a blossom tree...
Grab your mat and have a day picnic here if you got time for a relaxing noon...

The Prefectural Uji Park is a small island that is surrounded by the Uji river as it splits the flow of the water down stream. It was connected by three bridges to the river shores. The island seem to be having some sort of activity that day but I did not stay around long enough to find out what it was.

When we visited the park by early April this year, the cherry trees there were still in bud stage. Festive decorations and shop stalls have just been removed and it was a pity that we arrived here not in good timing.

Uji Park is actually located on Tounoshima Island next to Uji River. There are several wooden bridges that link up the park with other areas in the region. Apart from the trees planted in various location of the park, the open space thereat are suitable for holding festive activities and for children playing purposes. We have seen large scale bazaar held there during sakura time and the environment was really lovely and enjoyable. Highly recommend travelers to visit this place both in spring and autumn.

Uji's mostly famous for tea, and these days, there's not a whole lot there. It's pretty, particularly in the spring, but it's mostly a commuter town. But the prefectural government has done wonders with this huge, beautiful park.
In April, of course, there are cherry blossoms everywhere, which is hard to beat. But so long as it's not freezing cold, blazing hot, or pouring, you really can't miss... especially if you have kids, or want to wander around romantically.
It's not the easiest thing to get to, I should note. Easiest is to catch a 240 or 250 bus (regular or A, it doesn't matter) from JR Uji Station. Tell the driver "koh-en" (公園, park), or better yet, have the name of the place on a card. When you get there, you'll see what appears to be some green lawn and a bunch of trees. Don't be fooled.
When you walk in, keep walking. As the path rises and curves, you'll come on the central play area. Here you'll find a huge slide, complicated climbing things, play houses, all kinds of stuff. Also plenty of space for playing catch or just running around like maniacs. If your children are gregarious or speak some Japanese, they're practically guaranteed to be involved in some sort of game with others very soon.
Parents can just relax in the sun, or sit in the shade. Most of the benches are sunny, so if that's a concern, be sure to bring what the Japanese call a "leisure sheet" (pronounce it "ree-zha-shee-to"), which is a sort of brightly-colored tarp you spread on the ground. There are also plenty of well-planned short walks through the grounds.
Picnic Notes: Plan ahead, as there's nothing to buy at the park. You will want a leisure sheet, food, drinks, hats, sunscreen, and a biggish carry-bag. Alcoholic beverages are perfectly fine, but don't wander around with them: drink your drink at your picnic site. There are a small number of waste bins around, so be prepared to haul your trash home if necessary.
