Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went here with my 15yo daughter - we are both beginners. We were given fairly detailed instructions when mounting our horses, which were somewhat overwhelming for my daughter. When she attempted to turn the horse who was being stubborn and wouldn't respond, the instructor got a little irritated, which was a disappointing. We're new to this so a little understanding would be nice! Also, we were allocated horses who apparently didn't like each other. This meant we rode a few horses apart. It would have been nice to ride together. Nevertheless, once we got going it was great fun and the instructor -despite being a little grumpy initially- is actually
really nice, very funny and very experienced. You get taken across a paddock out through to a grassed area, all while travelling in single file, going through bushes etc-wear long sleeves/pants! you get to trot a bit then you go through the dunes out onto the beach -it's just beautiful. It doesn't take long to get used to riding. We had the best time and I would highly recommend this place. It's $50 per person. We got there 12.30, were on our horses by around 12.50 and returned just before 3pm. Best day ever!

Being a beginner, I was instructed well. I rode a retired race horse Rueben. Full sleeves and pants are recommended as you will pass many bushes. Also, consider taking fly mask; thousands of them around. Give your self some extra time, we were late by 1.15 hours. Over all a very good experience.

Wouldn't reccomend for children. The "pony" ride was a horse ride. Inexperienced and abusive staff. Grandson had to jump off to my daughter as horse was rearing up and he almost certainly would have been thrown. Staff blaming other daughter for " not walking it properly". Then said horse was in pain from a bite. Reluctantly, Tried again with other grandson with staff close by. Same thing happened. This time blamed the car and bike noise??? To top it off staff verbally abused the 9 year old. Disgusting. Never again

We book in for our kids birthdays and have always had a great time. The horses are quiet and well trained and the route is scenic and peaceful. Plenty of instruction is given as each horse has its own personality. A must when in Normanville. 👍

Went in spring with my 2 children, we had been talking about horse riding for years before this day. It was their first time riding a horse. Instructor was rude and not helpful for children who were nervous/scared or had not ridden a horse before. Do not recommend this for children. We ended up leaving after 30 minutes.
I have been myself with the company years ago and did enjoy myself. Very disappointed with the experience we had.

Taking my daughter and two grandaughters for a ride on the beach for a birthday gift was an exciting prospect, however we arrived to a very disorganised and hassled owner. I felt that the instructions given to the beginners was very rushed and poor and, at one stage, a few of the horses shied when a group of boys raced by on their skateboards while going through the caravan park. The owner didn't even turn around to check that everyone was OK. Unimpressed!

Horse riding with the most capable Karen, she made us feel comfortable and safe.. the ride through the sand dunes and beach will never be forgotten what a fantastic experience. Two hours flew past so quickly. Thanks to my lovely horse “Jack” .

Terrible! Don't do it to the poor horses. The trails are rough, and the horses have to do them 3 times a day and the staff are nothing but rude and inconsiderate. One staff member kept reaffirming that horses are stupid & the owner was nothing but rude. The horses have to stand outside all day everyday without any shelter and apparently they do not have enough money to feed all their horses (according to a staff member). So rude & dodgy, old gear (espically helmets) & robot horses. Please do not provide this company with business, unless you enjoy animal abuse.

I just stumbled across this and wanted to add how proud I am at the History of this establishment.
In 1969, as a Brother a little concerned that my Young Brother needed to settle down a bit :), and knowing that he had a Passion for Training Racehorses but was Single and broke as we always are at the Young Ages, the Property that saw the start of Young Bart Cummings and the Melbourne Cup Winner, Comic Court who broke Pharlaps record. Comic Courts Parents are buried down the back Paddock, in the same Grave and they have Legs entwined together.
There have been over 200,000 Clients through High Country Trails and they have not lost a single Soul. Something of an achievement considering that 75% of all Riders, have NOT been on a Horse.
This establishment, pioneered 'Holidays on Horseback' Australia wide and back in my Day, ran 2,3 & 4 Day Pack Horse Tours to the HIgh Country and down to Tunkalilla Beach on the South Ocean side.
It is still owned and run by my Brother.

We let our daughters, ages 9 and 11, choose one activity on the Fleurieu Peninsula and this was it. Mom and Dad were initially lukewarm on the idea, but we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Riding a horse on the beach under the brilliant blue Australian skies is a pinch-yourself moment that you'll never forget. Don't be put off by reviews criticizing the instructor. She's strict on purpose -- her job is to keep you safe! -- but she's perfectly friendly, and even took a dozen photos for us. Thanks for a great day!
