Clonakilla is a clear standout in the Canberra region. Be sure to book a tasting at this winery the cellar door as it gets popular, for good reason. There’s high quality wines on offer. The tasting is free and staff here are well prepared, they provide you with an enjoyable experience and you are sure to purchase some of their great wine. All of the wine we tried at Clonakilla was stunning. Known for their reds, we also thought the whites were quite exceptional. Their Reisling is quite sweet with oily mouth feel. The Chardonnay was one of our favourites, on the nose it is buttered toast and the flavour very nutty and toasty.
Their Voigneir was quite floral and sweet. Their Hilltop shiraz was another favourite, floral with winter berries and certainly is great value. Their world renowned Shiraz Voigner is a delicious wine, complex sweet and savoury with a nice earthiness.
The winery itself is also stunning. The space is large and has a lovely outlook on the vine clad hills. As you sit inside, you’re surrounded by local stone, reclaimed timbers, wine barrels and a large central fireplace. It’s homely, comfortable and a top place to add to your list.

Hi there thewhereto, you sound like a writer to me.... thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed review, and a most gleaming one at that. We really do appreciate every single comment you've made; that all sounds like what we'd like a typical visit to our cellar door to be. All the very best to you, hopefully we'll see you another time.

I went to Clonakilla ages ago (2003?) when their cellar door was in a tiny stone hut. Since then they have built a brand new tasting room with tables inside and out. They have a paved road all the way to their car park (which is dirt). Ample parking outside. Dogs allowed at the outside tables and there are heaters hanging down from the roof. The two unisex toilets are spacious and clean. The guy with the short straight grey hair who explained the wines to us was very knowledgeable and friendly. Actually all the staff seem to like their jobs. I have been to about six wineries in the Murrumbateman region and this was the best experience. The wines are superb especially the reds. We bought 6 bottles and got the 2013 Shiraz which we are very happy with. The only slight downside was there was no cheese plate for me to purchase so I got a bit dizzy. Overall had a great time. Can’t wait to return.

Thanks Ilikecheesealot for your visit and your feedback. The standout comment in your wrap is that 'all the staff seem to like their jobs'. This is true! We are both proud of our cellar door staff and appreciative of all they do, especially on frightfully busy weekends.

Our second visit to Clonakilla was every bit as good as our first. This time, we were joined by a group of friends (8 altogether), celebrating Christmas in July in the area. We were warmly welcomed, and felt reassured when social distancing rules were followed. Best of all, Clonakilla's wines are the showcase of wines in this region. We will be back.

Hi 127MichelleB, we're so glad to hear that nothing had changed from your first to second visit. Thanks too for bringing friends, and most importantly, that you felt safe here. We'll be practicing and enforcing COVID safe regulations for as long as is necessary. Thank you for your very kind words and taking the time to give feedback. We're already looking forward to seeing you again.

Our party of 8 were really happy with our visit to Clonakilla. Alastair, our guide, was able to guide us through a thoroughly fascinating tasting of the iconic Clonakilla wines from Riesling through to Pinot Noir and onto the flagship Shiraz Viogner, the king of Australian Shiraz.
A fabulous setting well suited to such fine wines. Thank you, Clonakilla

Booked a tasting for my wife and I, after trying a bottle offered by our AirBNB hosts in Yass.
When we entered there were 4 other couples already in the midst of their tasting sessions.
We were greeted with a smile by a young gal who has been working in the vineyards for 5 years, today running tasting sessions, it seems.
She was very knowledgeable, attentive, and kind.
There was a wide range of wines available to taste… about 5 whites and 6 or so reds, each with a unique flavor profile, and thus offering a nice range of terroir, winemaking styles, blends, and single varieties to taste.
Incredible value— the entire tasting was FREE— so the only cost was our time, and it was time well spent!
We left with a small bottle (not staying in the area long, and already with a supply of wine at our AirBNB). Nice array of non-alcoholic sodas as well; we purchased one along with our wine.
Highly recommend stopping here, and grateful for the experience!

I checked website to ensure the cellar door was open. It was open but, due to Covid, guests are required to book for a seated tasting - this was done via the website.
The seated tasting room, in what was to us, the new tasting area, worked very well led by knowledgeable, and friendly, Rob who we found out was a sommelier in a former life. He led us through the range of available wines. It was pleasing to note that despite the popularity and prestige of the top flight wines there was no cost for the tasting - a generous gesture on the part of the winery.
The wines are uniformly excellent but to our palates the shiraz wines were outstanding and what this cool climate region does best.
A very pleasant, relaxed tasting.
Note - we were told it gets quite busy on the weekends.

Hi 751stephenj, thank you for your kind words. Yes, Rob is a bit of a gem, his experience and love of wine, combined with his good nature, make for an informative and enjoyable tasting for our visitors. We have been pretty much booked out every weekend since the new COVID regulations came into place, so if you're hoping for a weekend visit, we recommend booking as early as possible. Thanks again 751stephenj.

A visit to Clonakilla was suggested by the sommelier during our dinner in Kingston and he was absolutely right
Clonakilla has a beautiful cellar door with stylish interiors and beautiful artwork giving a snapshot of the Canberra wine region.
Every wine was delicious and service was friendly.
Easily one of the best winery visits I've had in Australia.

Visited Clonakilla on a Friday in mid-November. Luckily for us it was fairly quiet with just a couple of other couples, and we had more time to soak up some of the impressive wine knowledge and insights of the young guy on duty. The range of wines available for tasting was not vast but everything we tried was superb, and the tasting extended to a vintage now selling for over $100 a bottle. We purchased what we thought was a reasonable amount but after a weekend in Canberra with friends, found our Clonakilla supplies had taken a big hit. We weren't the only ones who appreciated those Clonakilla wines. Our trip home required a quick detour via the winery so we could restock. An expensive side trip, but worth it.

Our party of six visited the cellar door on a Monday morning in February 2021 when it was very quiet.
The vintner, Robert, was very affable and made us feel very welcome. He shared his knowledge of wine making generously and gave us an unhurried, educational and most pleasurable wine tasting experience. Our visitors from Sydney enjoyed the morning and had a most memorable time.

We recently went to Clonakilla cellar door with a group of friends (11 people).
Clonakilla is one of my favourite Canberra wines and cellar door experiences, and they did not disappoint.
With a group, we had access to the back room, which is thoughtfully designed for group tastings in mind. A fabulous view of the vines through the window and a large tasting table in the middle. There was enough room for all of us, and the glassware!
Thanks to Rob (Cellar Door Manager) who helped me organise the tasting, he was helpful and responsive when I emailed and called and did a great tasting on the day.
