Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was well worth seeing as it was quite impressive in person. However, the trip on foot from Sagri was brutal. For a seasoned hiker under 50 no problem but be warned if you are not in shape and carry no water, it will be challenging. And there is no potable water at the museum or Temple. Take a tour bus if you can or drive there in a rental car. If you decide to hike it take trail number 7 and expect it to wind for awhile the opposite direction of the Temple but it will come around eventually and watch carefully for the trail markers. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water even in October.

Went here on a bus tour with a guide that could explain a whole deal about the place. Without background facts i suppose it looses value. The site itself represents a well preserved ruin/excavation.

Very unexpected for where it was located. Must have a car or take a tour. Beware maps (google and apple) try to take you down farm roads. Don’t trust and keep going… it will eventually re route you.

Located in the inland of the island, it is quite far from everything else, so i think that you need a transportation to go there. Both the Temple and the Museum are free to visit. It is a very nice formed archeological site with a path that leads you to the monument. At the middle of the path there is a small sigh that shows you to turn right on the hill for the Temple and straight to the Museum. The Temple is of major importance, cause it is the first ever made entirely of marble. So it is kind of a start-point for Architecture.
Don't miss the Museum. It is not viewable from the Temple because it is at a lower level at the side of the hill. It is a small one, but the facilities are modern and there are some interesting exhibits.

You will see why it is a temple devoted to Demeter. The landscape surrounding it looks relatively lush and fertile, considering how mountainous and rocky some parts of the island are. A lovely pathway leads to the site with shrubs and flowers lining both sides. There is a museum which was unfortunately closed by the time we arrived, however we were still able to visit the temple. I do not know if there is a fee for the museum. The temple itself was modified over the centuries. It is not so well marked but we finally found it. You park your vehicle on the side of the road.

A bit far form the town-you definitely need a transportation- not quite easy to find it up in the mountain of the island and just outside the village of Sangri, is the attractive ruin of the Temple of Demeter ( Demetra for the Greeks ). Demeter was a grain goddess, so it seems apparently natural to find her temple among the rich fields of Naxos. But it's definitely well worth a visit as it is one of the very few known temples with a square floor plan and no fee entrance.
It was built in the 6th century BC. The temple was partially dismantled in the 6th century AD when a church was built over it. In later centuries the site was abandoned and plundered for its marble.
Until recently, there was very little to see- none of the temple was left standing. But a few years ago, it was discovered that most of the columns and stones of the original temple still remained on site, either buried or used in the ruined chapel.
It was subsequently restored by German archaeologists to its present state which is now intact enough to show the basic form of the form of the Temple of Demeter.
By car from Hora: follow the road to FILOTI. After about 6 miles, turn onto the road signposted for ANO SANGRI and the TEMPLE OF DEMETER. Follow the signs for about 2 more miles to the temple. The last part of the drive is mainly on dirt roads.
Though there were signs for WC unfortunately there are no such facilities. Being the place in the middle of nowhere you are highly recommended to bring some bottles of water with you. I advise you to visit it early in the morning as the place is pretty hot and windy.

The temple itself has been slightly rebuilt to provide some context to what it may have looked like before. The museum is also worth a quick stop and included in the ticket price. There is a bathroom available as well. The surrounding valley views are quite beautiful and I’m glad I made the stop.
Note that the site is up on a little hill and the path is uneven. This may prove a bit of a challenge for those who cannot navigate this type of terrain easily.

Located just south of the tiny village of Ano Sangri, on the top of a small hill overlooking a beautiful green valley. Bit of a hike up the hill from the road, but it's a neat marble stone pathway and your surrounded by tall, flower-filled bushes and a few yellow butterflies ( in May - June ). Very good visitor center just before the top of the hill. Lots of information about the temple and a small model reconstruction, as well as excavated pieces on display. The english-speaking hostess in the center was very helpful with our questions. The temple site itself also has lots of signs with more information about the dig and partial reconstruction efforts. Bits of wall and quite a few columns remain standing ( pretty good for over 2,000 years ), giving you an excellent example of Greek architecture. Very worth the side-trip.

This is a very beautiful temple, out in the middle of nowhere (but not hard to get to). WEe went at sunset, the light was fantastic and we had it all to ourselves.

First of all I must say that is an amazing site, although it took us about 15 minutes to get there from the main road as the signs are not so clear... but signs are not clear anyway in Naxos.... or in Greece... but we were really excited to get there. It was very windy that day and being an open space you could feel it even more.
I enjoyed the site at its most, I believe is the best preserved site on the island
