We enjoy hiking in Azores and visiting the island of Sao Miguel. This rural trail should be made more popular; it is scenic, almost bucolic at times and offers superb views. It is also not too long and circular so it lend itself to a pleasant day trip. It can be done by anybody in average shape.

I found this on the Azores hiking website. The start was a bit difficult too find (a small sign on the main road in the middle of Maia). The first part was steeply uphill on a well marked path through farmland and fields then along an deep creek lined with bamboo. Near the top we passed close to grazing cattle which watched in bemusement. At the top we passed next to a road and had wonderful views of the coast and Maia. We descended steeply next to another ravine though pasture with many more great views. Near the bottom we passed vegetable gardens growing on the steep hillsides and passed the farmer climbing up to tend his crops. Back in town we skipped the last part along the beach having been well rewarded with the climb up and down.

I stayed for 4 days in Maia and enjoyed the hiking in this area a lot...many trail right from town. This was my favorite...it brings you right up to some great views right at the start...all very scenic farmlands, cows....looking out over Maia and the surrounding area. The last part bringing you down a long the coast. A really nice trail that put a smile on my face!
