Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great alternative to hiking in the mountains. Start at Wienerbruck railway station, hike down to the old hydro-electric power station (open to visitors), along the Oetscher gorge to Mirafall waterfall, then back up out of the gorge at Oetscherhias, to Mitterbach railway station. Took me about 5-6 hours. Not busy when I did it on a weekday. Stunning views of waterfalls, cascades, cliffs, rockfalls. Several bridges to cross, some wooden walkways and steep sections too.

Only 2h away from Vienna this alpine paradise is a must see for everyone who lives close to Vienna. The so called "Ötscher base" in Wiernerbruck offers all information you need and the scenic Mariazeller-Bahn train allows you to adapt the length of your hike to your wishes. Different distances are possible from a moderate 3h walk to a full 2-days trip. Your path will lead you past beautiful waterfalls and steep walls of rock as well as through ferry-tail like woods. You cross the rivers over small foot-bridges and if you like you can also go swimming at some spots, although the water is rather cold as one would expect in the mountains. One if my favorite places in the world!

We spent a week in the area and chose Wienerbruck as our base camp. I must say that because of the easy access I was expecting a far less dramatic landscape and tame walks, but I was greatly surprised by the canyons, waterfalls, gorges and steep mountains around. I absolutely loved it. We were lucky enough to arrive during the shoulder season and had very few companions around the trails. We stayed near the entrance to Otschergraben at the train station. Not near or close. I mean we stayed at the train station...and it was amazing. The place has been tastefully renovated and it is now a very comfortable place to stay. There are two fully equipped units, one for couples and one for families (with bunk beds). And although the train still runs literally 4 meters from the window of our room, it is very quiet. I believe the first train arrives at 9am and the last one at 7pm. We took advantage of our accommodation and trekked to nearby villages and then took the train and simply rolled back to our beds. We biked to Mariazelle (the place has good bikes too!) and again put the bikes in the train and saved a couple hundred calories;)
Highly recommended place to stay.
The park's visitors centre is very nice too. It overlooks a little lake and "our" train station. The food is very decent.

Well, I've wandered the Ötscher Trenches several times, up to the ridge, but what's pissing me off more and more is the mass tourism that prevails here. If you have to stop every 20m because whoever comes to meet you, it's really not funny anymore. And if, as is the case today, a Haöbschuhtourist family with Deigner Handtadcherl and Klapperl is accommodating and you therefore have to wait, preferably on the hillside waste side, since the gentlemen are not sure-footed, as can be clearly seen, then, well, then I prefer to find routes away from the trenches again. It should really be the mountain rescue at the entrance and check who wants to get in there.

This graben offers variety of trips from time scale point of view, and it is unique example of geological forces results in carbonates rocks. The whole trip is very well equipped by technical tools, what makes the trip quite comfortable. Anyway a certain portion of attention is needed. Restaurant and parking place near entrance to the canyon is available. I think that each lover of nature has to be satisfied.

and the most beautiful walk, which can be easily accomplished if you choose a spring or fall day instead of a hot sunny weekend day to wander around. End of April, one day before the official opening May 1st, we walked almost alone, it was about 15 degrees, perfect for a light load, no rain, some breeze and we were able to stop and take pictures and admire as long as we wanted. Given the narrow paths, I would imagine this being a difficulty on a crowded day. Take plenty of water as there was only one Hütte (Guesthouse) on the way for shopping and eating. The two waterfalls alone would worth a visit, but we made a full circle from Wienerbruck to Mitterbach, that takes about 5 hours in very comfortable pace and with some "fuel" stops. Wanting to do this for 3 years and was no disappointment I must say!

The area around the imposing mountain Ötscher is great for hiking and relaxing - during 2015 the region was perfectly prepared for tourists (handles along steep paths, renovated bridges and rebuilt base camps)
Perfect for a day or weekend trip from Vienna (accessible by train) - even for elderly, dogs, and kids accessible (although it used to bra challenging walk prior) - especially the walk around the lake is easy to master (Erlaufklause/Wienerbruck) the path down to Ötscher hias and the actual ötschergraben has a steep entry/exit)
Entry price into the park is fair - but a drawback: if you prepare for tourists, they come ;)
Especially on weekends we experienced too many people for us - a little hiking experienced couple - we preferred the routes a little off the main routes - not so many picture views, but silence...

My brother-in-law from Pinzgau, not local knowledge, dared to ask if there is service or self-service here
The lady's answer: yes what, I have 700 guests a day here!
On leaving, as he is used to on hikes in his homeland, he was taught:
This is called "Goodbye."
Never, ever, ever again! Guaranteed. Plus the prices, just totally over the top.

Hello, I would be interested to travel by train from Vienna to Otschergraben. Can you give me information on the nearest arrival town that is closest to the entrance? I'll be going there hopefully in June
