Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The wonderful enclave. You have to go prepared because there is nothing nearby, if you want to buy something you have to do it first. The room is spacious and clean. Very friendly staff.
Scarce food, poor quality and poorly cooked.

To add a cultural balance to the fantastic hiking in Aizkorri Aratz, the Sanctuary can't be missed. It has an incredibly powerful aesthetic both without and within, and an amazing story of perseverance in how it came to be.
Don't miss the crypt below the main sanctuary; the artwork there is fantastic.

I found the Sanctuary interesting because of the history of why it was built there, and the story of the conflict between the Basque artists and the church about how it should be built and decorated. It is an imposing structure and serves also as a good starting out point for hiking.

lots of history
Beautiful scenery Good food and peaceful place.
On my bucket list for staying, My review of the restaurant says it all what we felt about the place. Lots of basque history and a real sense of the basque people.

It was an amazing cathedral and cript, unlike what you see anywhere else. The Vatican did not want to sign off on it as a church in the 1960 due to it archecture being “non church like”! A 15 minute drive up the hill from Onati. I wish there could have been an English guide of some sort to learn even more. Worth a visit!

The architecture is something to marvel at. Inside, the church was very solemn and quiet, good for prayer and reflection. Outside, the view is also great!

This mountain monasterio is well worth the visit. Although designed and built in the 50s by Sáenz de Oiza this reinterpretation of religous archictecture still resonates. The artistic collaborations with the leading Basque artists of the the time period (Oteiz a/ Chillida / Basterretxea) are still intriguiging amost 70 years later.

There are 3 hotels or Fondas within walking distance of the basilica and great basque food and wine will top off the occasion.

This of course doesn't even enter into the amazing mountain paths and views at reach using the church as your starting point.

I want to alter my blog of 2012 because the train no longer runs to Otsuarte. A good way to walk to Arantzazu -uphill through the woods - is to follow the camino de Santiago (yellow arrow) trail from Zegama. You can get to Zegama by train from San Sebastian to Beasain and then bus to Zegama. There are 2 pensions in Zegama ,best to stay overnight and start fresh in the morning. It is a bit of an uphill haul but well waymarked with yellow arrows fingerposts and bollards. After about 8km you reach St Adrian's tunnel. About 200 mtrs through the tunnel there is a natural spring on the left. Carry on the yellow arrow trail until you come to a fingerpost pointing right to Arantzazu. It is much better waymarked than when I was there in 2012, but I don't know if the hotel is any better!

The sanctuary is a beautiful enclave in the Basque region. The nature surrounding the buildings is breathtaking and if you can visit during the festivities you will be embrace in a cultural and spiritual unforgettable experience. It is not easy to find it and when busy you will have to park considerable far but this should not deter you, as the walk will be pleasant and enjoyable. The mountains views made the visit worthy. The sanctuary is modern, perhaps not for all tastes, but it is different and interested enough with plenty contributions from local artists: Oteiza (the sculptures of the Apostles), Basterretxea (paintings covering the crypt) or Chillida (entrance doors). The glass windows and the altarpiece are nice.
