The "Musee des Charmettes" is a very peaceful place. It is outside the town and gives us the feeling to be in the middle of nowhere (but it's only 2 km away from downtown !). The gardens are pretty large and full of mysterious plants. It's outstanding. The view that we have from Chambery is astonishing. From the outside, the... More

we've came there very late, it was closed. But the gardens were opened, and we've enjoyed every moment there...and what a luck: they were performing a play (by some local, probably amateur theatre) at that very moment in front of the house. We could not stay, mainly because our French is not at all sufficient to understand the play....but we've... More

For anyone who has read Jean-Jacques Rousseau, it is likely that seeing this house will be very significant. It is one of the major historical attractions of Chambéry, and is advertised as such, but it is difficult to find and the roads leading to it are not well marked. We got a map from the Office de Tourisme in the... More

This is a very worthwhile visit, only a couple of kilometres from the centre of Chambéry. We visited in Summer, the gardens are absolutely beautiful and so tranquil, we really didn't want to leave, such a stunning part of the world. Friendly staff and very interesting history of Rousseau. The house is a bit run down, however it has a... More

The garden is nice, with a great view of Chambéry. The house is beautiful from the outside but it's not at all well kept... a lot of maintenance is to be done there, also to give the house a certain atmosphere. The entrance is free of charge and the people who work there are really nice! Only downside of going... More

If you have any interest at all in Rousseau, this is a worthwhile day trip. The house itself is pretty run down, and it would be nice if the people who run the place would put some resources into fixing it up, but the grounds are beautiful and there is something quite spiritual about being there.
