Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We rented a driver and car from Medellin and travelled the 49 miles from the city in total comfort to see the Parque Temático Replica that stands on the banks of the 25 sq. miles reservoir created by the Guatape Dam. The dam was constructed in the 1970s by the Empresas Públicas de Medellín as part of a large hydroelectric complex to supply electricity to Medellin. Many farms and small communities were lost under the raising water of the reservoir. Including the original village of Viejo Peñol, that was founded on June 20, 1714.
Parque Temático Réplica del Viejo Peñol, is a duplicate copy of the village church, and was reconstructed along with lots of tourist souvenir shops. There is a viewing point of the reservoir and on a clear day you can see the cross on top of the original villages submerged church steeple. It is possible to rent a boat and view the reservoir, unfortunately we did not have time to rent a boat to check out all the superb waterside villas of wealthy people from Medellín, including the likes of famous sportsmen, and even Pablo Escobar's old house. The plaza is approached by passing two framed blue tile pictures of the old village, lots of souvenir stalls, shops, statues, and the church, which is worth a visit even if to only get out of the sun. As a reproduction its nothing special, having all the basic religious stuff, plus the wooden pulpit and the Tabernacle from the original church. Behind it the is a small grass area and children’s play area.
Tip: Check out the fine collection of photos of the different stages of demolition
and flooding of the valleys in one of the souvenir shops.

It's a replica of the old Peñol town. It has a great view of the lake and a few great souvenirs shops. Great place for pictures.

This is a little tourist trap, but it's cute for photos and worth a quick stop. Don't buy a tour ticket. Just catch the city bus from Medellin, El Peñol, La Piedra del Peñon, or Guatapé. From Guatapé, it took about 40 min and cost 11mil or something. Less than $3.
Tell the driver to drop you at La Replica. Then you walk about a half mile up the long drive. Go early or late afternoon on a weekday to avoid the tour busses.
It is free to walk around the little plaza. There is a restaurant / cafe and many tourist trap souvenir shops.
It isn't a must-see, but there's a nice view of the lake below, and the town replica is cute when there aren't any other people there. It makes a nice little stop between El Peñol (12 min away) and La Piedra (25 min away).
I stayed in Guatapé and took the early bus to La Piedra to climb the rock at 7am. There were a total of 7 people at that hour on a Wednesday. Then I returned to the main road and caught the bus to La Replica. It took less than an hour to walk up to it, take a look around, and walk back down. Then I caught the bus from the road again and was in the town of El Peñol by 11am. Busses pass every 30 min or so and you just wave them down.

A beautiful place. Small, as it only has the main buildings replicated from the original El Peñol. There is a nice restaurant and a cafe.

This attraction recreates what was the Old Peñol town, with its plaza and other buildings. There are a variety of shops offering fabulous souvenirs, some that I didn't see at other attractions around, so making this stop is advisable. Likewise, the service is very good in each store and it has a large parking space, as well as a viewpoint to the flooded place where the town was originally located.

Old Peñol is a colorful tour to Guatapé that tells the story of the old town before it was flooded to form the Guatapé Dam
