This is a must-do item when you are visiting Chiang Mai. The air is fresh and clean, and there is a crispness about the place. The greenery is just so beautiful. And of course, the adage holds true : leave nothing but your footprints, bring nothing away but your memories.

On its edge, is this interesting unit of Doi Suthep National Park. I think it makes for a great little stop especially if you're visiting nearby Wat Umong. According to its signs, it's an education center so I imagine people come here (maybe school trips) to get educated. There are quite a few trails that I roamed for about an hour. I saw lots of wildlife, particularly buffalo (carabao?) and deer. Also there are some old Buddhist structures probably related to Wat Umong that I thought to be quite interesting. I think kids would like coming here to get close to the animals. Down the road from Wat Umong, there is a big sign with it's name near the awesome No. 39 Cafe where you turn to get here.

I myself really love nature. So I feel very good to see the beautiful forest nearby the city. Feel fresh and happy everytime I walk in the lush green forest. Good for wildlife.

We went up to the Doi Suthep temple (good for 10 minutes of walking around) with a red bus. It cost us 50 baht per person and it leaves from the bus station at the university. You can get there with another bus from your hotel for 30 baht.

Before going, download maps.me, it is a good app which shows the walking trail. The walking trail goes from the temple down to 2 waterfalls: Sai Yoi and Mon Tha Than.

The trails starts from the parking behind the temple. The red bus might drop you there. Also there is the back entrance of the temple: a concrete ugly stairs. This will get you passed the 30 bath entrance. We did this by mistake, that's how we found out.

The hike towards the waterfalls is not really easy. You have to trust on maps.me and sometimes there are trees on the trail. At a certain point just before the Sai Yoi waterfall, you will need to climb through branches of a big fallen tree. But trust me: maps.me has the right way.

You will finally pass both waterfalls and come to a campsite. Walking out of this campsite will lead you to the main road. This will bring you past a checkpoint. It you would go the other way, it would cost you 100 baht.

Walk a little on the main road and then maps.me will send you right at a certain point, off-road. There is a staircase there and the trail leads to a rocky area where a lot of monks do their daily business. It is a very nice area which is a short cut to the red bus station. Also here: if you would walk the other way, it would cost you 100 baht... don't know why. Don't exactly know what this is. There is a checkpoint marked on maps.me, so avoid it. Maps.me won't lead you towards it if everything goes well.

Then walk to the bus station and take a 30 baht bus back to your hotel (they will say 50 baht, which is a rip off).

This trail takes approximately 2,5 hours. The time that maps.me says is not true, since the trails aren't parts where you can walk 5km per hour. Look at my print screens for the details of maps.me to check if you have it right.

Enjoy!

NOTE: This review is not about the place itself (which is OK), but about the transportation towards it.

Don't get FOOLED! Going to this place won't cost you over 700 baht per person, take the public bus (within the Chiang Mai square), which will take you to the Chiang Mai Zoo for just 15 Baht, from there you take a red songthaew for 40 baht. On the mountain itself they (red songthaew) will take you back to Chiang Mai for 60 baht.

The view from the mountain is great, the temple itself is not special (I mean if you've seen 1 you've seen them all)

At first we thought we need to go for a day tour to Doi Suthep. Later, we found out that we could go by ourselves. We took a ride of red car (20 bht each) from the old city to Zoo. Then , we got off and took another ride on red car (30 bht each) to go up Doi Suthep. It was a nearly 20 minutes ride to go up. Then, we arrived, we buy a ticket for 50bht (30 bht for entrance and 20 bht for the elevator). In fact, one might choose to walk up the few hundred stairs in 10 minutes. I would not feel it was a wonderful temple comparing to those in Myanmar. But from there you could have a nice panorama view of the city. You could see the Ping river, airport and landscape. Also, it would not cost you much to pay a visit there. Only half day would be enough. On your way back, also take the same route, we stopped by the nimmanhaemin road, where we would shop at the MAYA Plaza.

The temple is pretty nice, the trip is cosy on your scooter and the waterfall is quite nice.

Tips:
Get your taxi to drop you off at Maya Shopping Mall. From there walk towards the park, and stop,at Nat Motor (Honda) to rent a scooter for the day (300b).

Start early, remember warm clothes (it's cold at the top) and skip the royal park if you're in a hurry.

We did a day trip to Doi Suthep having read from other reviewers that it is a "must do" while in Chiang Mai, and I honestly don't know why people thought so highly of it.

If anything, it feels like a big tourist trap. Because it's so close to Chiang Mai, expect hundreds of visitors everywhere.

We hired a personal car to take us to various places: Hmong Village (really just a large outdoor market); Royal Palace (nice grounds but it's a fairly long walk to the mansion); Cave trail (800 meter trail that takes you by a cave where a monk lives; best part of the day for me, but the trail is a little confusing at times); Temple (100's of visitors and looked like a tourist trap so didn't bother with this at all); Waterfall (really small and unimpressive).

If you've got some extra time to kill, by all means visit it. If you've got a limited amount of time in Chiang Mai, I'd suggest you skip Doi Suthep and perhaps consider Doi Inthanon (see review) or another day outing like Elephant Nature Park (see review).

P.S. You'll need to have your shoulders and knees covered to visit the Palace (and probably the temple as well). If you're in short-shorts and a tank top, you can rent pants and a long sleeve shirt at the entrance.

I travelled up the mountain in the late afternoon to see the view over Chiang Mai and waited there for sunset when the golden pagoda was lit up and it looked magic against the cobalt blue sky. The monks filed into the prayer house where they were chanting in front of the Buddha statue. The temple area was not overcrowded at that time of day, certainly worth a visit at that time. This was in November.

20 years ago I used to go out for several days with the trekking companies based in Chiang Mai to the northern forests. It was a great experience sleeping in various hill tribe villages. However it struck me as slightly daft to have to travel 3 hours to a trekking location when right outside the city is the Doi Suthep National Park which is accessible in 30 minutes from the city. No one seemed to be going there to trek, certainly not the commercial people anyway.

I spent many enjoyable hours tramping the trails that are scattered about the slopes using the army contour map and a compass to find my way around. You can follow the trail down from the top to the Huay Tung tau lake - a full day. You can visit the Hmong village ban Doi Pui and walk around there. A useful book is available in the bookshops and online which is Walking on Doi Suthep - a Guide to 20 day treks on Chiang Mai's Scared Mountain which has maps and instructions. It also gives a reasonable introduction to the culture, the climate and the forest.

Whilst I never got into trouble there walking alone, trekking on the mountain is not recommended for single females. Be smart, be safe go with a couple of mates.
